What is this gasket for?

I'm doing a full rebuild on my 2F. I got an ITM brand major overhaul gasket set. I know what every piece in the kit is for, except for this one item.

The outside of this is metal and looks like it is made up of slim strips that have been wrapped and then spot welded. Sandwiched between the strips is this green material. I'm thinking the green stuff is asbestos and this may be an exhaust donut that would go between the manifold and down pipe. But, I compared it to the output on a 1F exhaust manifold and this donut is too big around.

Any other ideas?

Thats about the only thing it could be. I've been through the entire engine FSM twice and can't find any place this would go except there.

So I guess I'll proceed with assembling the rest of the bottom end now....:hillbilly:

Next time maybe I shouldn't wait so long between when I tear it apart to when I put it back together. Seems in my advancing years my memory isn't quite as "crisp" as it used to be.

It's definitely the exhaust donut. It's worth replacing it if it's been smashed down.

Problem maybe your rebuilding a 2F but you compared it to a F engine exhaust. I mainly work on early F engine but I'm pretty sure exhaust is larger on the 2F. I know the 2F uses three bolts instead of two bolts like the F engine to attach the down pipe to the exhaust manifold.

I think you're right, I vaguely remembered the exhaust being larger diameter on the 2F when I pulled it. I just wanted to get some input from others before I got the motor all assembled only to find out this was some sort of spacer that goes behind the cam shaft or something.

Fortunately I have headers so I can just hang this thing on a nail and get on with it. Thanks for everyones input.
