What is the best performing ignition for a 2F (or worst)

I have had two bad ignitors. Not a huge number but..

on my fj45/2f i used a new bought in australia dizzy with a
pertronics supplied by mark A and when put on top tester
timed 7degrees at idle it goes to 36 deg at 2200rpm

Here is a 79 2f I am getting to install in my 71, if I squint I can make out the dizzy in the pic but it is a small cap and probably the original cause it only has 88k miles on it.

If the 79 is electronic then I might as well go with that eh? Unless it fails.

i believe 78 started with electronic ign., so changing to the 60 series large cap only nets you the improved hold-down method/clamp, bearing type(as opposed to bushing type) and the larger cap. but i hear pulling the current side cover off to install the dented one is a bitch. since your engine is out of the truck it would be easy, and i would defenitely go ahead with the 60 series dizzy.

It's not hard at all. You have to remove the distributor anyway. Then remove the old cover. Scrape the old gasket off move the coolant lines out of the way and install the new one. If you use gasket selant on the cover to the gasket only is is pretty easy once it has tacked up. Only mod I can think of would to be to reroute the PCV hose to the back if yours was originally in the front.




I've heard really good things about the HEI with the right gear on it. Expensive but works really well.

Best I would think would be a 60 distributor with all the guts taken out of it except for the trigger, hooked up to a TBI system. I think a computer is a lot smarter than a mechanical advance system any day.

I had a 78 I think on mine before I went TBI, I think. It was the one that had vaccum adv and retard. It worked really well. I got it from Poser. Yanked the old one out along with the igniter and bolted the new one in. Only had to run one wire to the igniter. Very easy.

I had a Mallory dual points in my first 40 with a f motor. It was the worst piece of crap. I hated it.

Though I would think the best distributor is one that have been gone through and serviced and recurved like one from Jim C.

Jim C hasn't answered my email but I will keep trying as I'd like to to my carb but am unsure what a desmog on it would involve.

Rebuilding a carb is no prob but I am clueless on the emissions stuff and what carb/dizzy work needs doing to eliminate that


Someone said Mark of Marks off road is also a good guy for carbs and dizzys and getting the desmog right

bssmith123, both Mark A and Jim C have rebuilt carbs for me and they do an outstanding job.you can't go wrong with either....HTH

A non USA dizzy with points.
Cut out the ignitor, and run a ballast resistor and a condensor.
Cheap, simple, and no expensive parts to replace should they go bad.
A spare cap, points, and rotor kit is $24.
