Decided to make the round trip down Ophir around to Ridgway and eat at True Grit cafe. At the first switchback I had to wait on this ambitious Toyota Highlander family.

I actually had some time to spend with the cruiser today. I spent most of it cleaning parts. I got the engine bay, transmission, and some other misc. stuff. I did have time to clean and re seal the oil pans. I was kinda on the fence about taking the engine out a couple weeks ago but it’s very nice being able to get to everything easily. I basically pulled the drive train to fix the numerous leaks and do the “while you’re in there” stuff.

^^^ Great Job on that ... HUGE difference!!

Thank you. Ok. Now I want one. That looks like an awesome ride! I’m guessing they aren’t importable yet though. Every other part of the world always has the really cool cruisers.

Totally importable as it sits on an 80 series chassis, but I believe the pictured troopy has a buyer. More to come from Maltec.

Went trailing with my buddies. Did a couple of river crossings which took out my horn and brand new aux fan!

A nice drive through the scenic Feather River canyon (hw 70) for swift water rescue training on the north fork. Stayed at the famed land cruiser hotel :). Actually grown quiet fond of sleeping in the back when traveling solo; quiet, dark, comfy, and secure. I’m 6’2” and deem this the maximum height to bed down in the back, diagonal.

Turns out recovery of vessels, log jams, and people out of rivers is very similar to vehicle recovery, go figure. With a simple anchor system (and good rope) one can gain substantial mechanical advantage. One take away to share is how powerful it is to pull perpendicular to a tow/rescue
line; even if just by man-power one can multiply pull strength many times over:

Great pictures but even greater experience! I'd like to attend something like that, especially in person. I think there is a lot to be gained from applied physics in these situations.

Figured out an interior tire storage solution that fits my needs until the 4x4 labs rear arrives.

I was keeping the spare on the roof which is a poor choice with a 315/75/16. I had it on the crossbars with some various shims to evenly distribute weight. Sure enough I noticed today that one of the screws for the factory bars had sheared from the stress.

Pulled one of the rear seats and purchased some L brackets at the local hardware store. Used the stock seat bolts to secure them down and ratcheted the tire to the floor and rear cargo box (Dobinsons).

So far it seems very stable running a few washboard roads. If this was a permanent solution I would look at welding up a carrier that mounts to the box and seat brackets.

Still retaining use of the extra seat for a 3rd passenger or most frequently the dog.

All fixed

Went for a canoe, then decided a work platform to strap onto the front wheel would be handy when working in the engine bay from above. It sits on top of the drawers and ties on with a bit of webbing. What looks like a diagonal brace is actually horizontal, between the 2 vertical legs.

What did you do with your 80 this weekend: maintenance, fix, wheel, nothing, new mod??

Me:
new to this website.
i'm pretty sure i'm in the wrong forum.. but would a 1995 land cruiser for 4,550 be a good price?
everywhere I look, the price for a 80 series and a 100 series are very similar which is a bit confusing considering one is older than the other

With help from @Stylo07 I was able to set the proper preload on my wheel bearings and top of the knuckle grease. I was also surprised by a gift...a 90915-20004 filter for my next oil change!

I got deep into the passenger side quarter panel trying to figure out why I have no left turn signal, brake lights, running lights on my trailer (right side works fine, marker lights on both sides work fine). I cut out a connector that's just outside of the "black box" and butt spliced the wires back together because my tester said I had voltage above the connector in the yellow wire but not below it. Felt all victorious after getting that done in that tiny little space, plugged everything in and still nothing. Land Cruiser 1, me 0. Rematch to be scheduled.
