Finished the fab and installed a 1/4" thick skid plate to to replace the original, and installed a Ruff Stuff rear diff cover. I picked up the diff cover from Georg and was informed that he always has to deepen the ring gear inner relief cuts to make them fit and to be sure to dry fit it and check before assembling. He was right, of course. Note that I had fitted a 62's rear sway bar on my '87 60. It won't work with this diff cover. It needs to set farther from the axle to clear this cover. I plan to remedy this after Rubithon (first timer...) given that my fairly novice off road skills can benefit more from the diff cover than having the sway bars!

This weekend the we took Stoffel out on an overnighter in northern Utah. We met up with some of the old FJ Cruiser club members that we used to trail run with and some new folks. The wife, myself, and our friend had a blast with the rest of the group! We took the old transcontinental rail road bed from Wendover, NV all the way to Golden Spike National Monument; about 180 miles of dirt off road. I ended up getting two flat tires, but that is about par for this trail (damn rail road spikes)! The first was swapped out for the spare and the second was able to be patched in the field. It was a great time!! All pics can be found here:

Broke down the package on my new bumper/tire carrier, inventoried all the bits and pieces and did some research on how to put it all together. Spent some time crawling around underneath the backside of the tractor to figure out which rivets will have to come out as well; not really looking for to that part of the job, but thankfully other MUDders have posted some good 'how-to' information on doing that.

Collk22,

About two weeks back I just did both my front and rear bumpers. I picked up the 4+ classics directly from Dave. If you get stumped or stacked give me a shout.

Just drove it for the first time in three weeks!!!

Big weekend started tonight. H55F install and Xfer case rebuild. I'll do a separate thread w/ pics. I was going to start tonight, but my bud with garage got with friends after work and blew it off. Nature of the beast. So I may be going to rent a transmission jack and going it solo in my driveway. Fxxxer :flipoff2:

So, tonight to get started, I marinated all bolts in PB and removed the "skid plate". Man, what a greasy dirty mess that thing was. I skipped the pics of that. Just imagine thick baked on sludge and grime, neglected for years, both sides, ugh. One bolt had been snapped off by a rock, and the nub was not coming out, no. So I had to moto-grind the nub flat, center punch it, drill it out, and use a removal bit to remove it. I was proud when it came out text book perfect. An auspicious start.

Tomorrow the real work begins.

Removed the roof rack on Wednesday Took a wire wheel to the roof rack yesterday and started and Finshed pianting the rust spots today. If I keep pushing hard I will be able to start working on the wooden deck tomorrow and reinstall the rack Tuesday or Wednesday.

No pretty pictures, but I put add-a-leafs on all four corners. The heaviest stock OME springs front and rear just weren't cutting it for my 60 with the 1HZ conversion, dual batteries, winch bumper, sliders, 4x4 labs rear bumper, Hi-Lift jack, 38 gal tank and full cargo load. It's going to the Rubicon in this condition but I can't help but think that TWO add-a-leafs in the rear wouldn't have been the ticket.
