Go get two FJ62 front diffs. The fronts are used a fraction of the rears and have 4.11's instead of 3.73s of the fj60
I imagine that would help a lot especially in conjunction with the H55F

Also depends on which Colorado altitude ;)
We have a fair variance....4K to 14K
 
Also, if you didn't already know, low octane fuel is a good thing at high altitude. Gotta make the most bang with the rarified air.

Agree but I often see this is the auto answer to the 60 woes. A $2800 transmission and the total hassle and cost of swapping out 3.70s to 4.11’s.

Put that fuel injection in and call me in the morning.

Think all really comes down to your need for certain things and how often you are driving on semi-flatish roads. Got four basic ways to get to Lake Tahoe from my house starting at 4500', depending on the direction you go will dictate how much steep climbing you will do over what distance. One way is definitely more gradual vs. the other (north vs. south) so going North the 5th gear would be more usable in the mtns vs. the south where 4th is going to even be pushing it.

Unless I'm mistaken, 5th gear in the H55F isn't just "one more" straight and simple...
It changes all the shift points so you aren't hung up by shifting at the same RPM/MPH
points. Having a 5-spd may make carrying 4th up a hill possible when the H42F 4-spd
would not allow you to shift from 3rd to 4th...topping out at 45mph at 2900 RPM.

Same goes for gears...different shift points based on achieving rpms at different speeds.

Went the direction of 3FE, H55f, and 4:11 differentials mainly because of the two vehicles I had to work with - a rust-free FJ60 and a well-running but banged up FJ62. Bought both for a total of $2,700. And the H55f was about $1,850 new from Cdan about 3 or 4 years ago. Easy to swap the entire axles over because I was going to an OME suspension anyway.

A lot of the driving we've done, and will continue to do, is fairly long distances around the Four Corners area to get to remote areas of the Southwest, for 4-wheeling and camping. Most of the trips involve hundreds of miles on relatively flat highways at 65 to 75 mph, with steep, rocky, and challenging 4WD roads at our destination. A good overall match at a fairly low cost, for a versatile vehicle that will last as long as I'm able to drive.

Gentlemen: I apologize for generating this conversation. I may start a new thread on this subject. Although I think everything that could be said has already been said. Thank you all for your comments.

As an aside, this is the best running 2F I've ever owned. By far. Gearing, transmission, etc is all open to debate. I'm not f***ing with the 2F. Just did the math on my fill-up at lunch: I used 16.78 gallons in 252 exact miles. I'll let you do the math. I'll take it!
 
that's about 40% more mileage that I used to get in my 350 camaro...
 
and about 70% more than the old f250...
 
Headed out tomorrow for a road trip through the Rockies. Weather providing, going up Gore canyon to Kremling to meet I-80 at Laramie. Then east to the armpit of Nebraska to eat dinner with my Mom. Then returning via Leadville and Crestone to visit friends. Then off to Salt lake City to pick up my 8 yr old daughter from the airport to be back to work by the 26th. I got a lot of faith in this 30 yr old truck.

If I get a H55F before next July I can tell you first hand as I will be taking my 60 out there. If I have a chance I will be getting my full floater rebuilt and installed. But at the speed I am going it will get rebuilt in 2020.

I will be in Silverton and area, and then up into the Aspen area. So we will see.
