We have around 8-12 inches of snow on the ground right now, and I nearly got stuck in it with my family on Thursday (had to stop on a steep hill, had a hard time getting any wheelspin to get going again, ended up sliding sideways into the ditch slowly, before backing out in 4-Lo).

So today I drove down ~20 miles of snow covered Forest Service road to figure out how to drive the GX in the snow. I found that 4-Lo sucks in the snow. A-Trac seems to kill throttle with any amount of wheelspin and kept the tires from digging down through the snow to the ground. In 4-Hi, stopped on a snow covered-hill, with the center diff locked and VSC off, I'd initially get some slow wheelspin after which traction control would start to kick in. When that happened I'd punch the throttle, the brakes would clamp down on the loose(r) tires, the engine would easily rev to 3-4k RPM with tires spinning, and I could dig myself out in around 3-4 seconds with no problem. Traction control AND wheelspin proved to be a great combo, and made the GX unstoppable. Not sure why wheelspin seems to be limited in 4-Lo (maybe to keep from breaking driveline parts?), but at least it's allowed in 4-Hi.

Yeah, that's the body mount chop (BMC) so the tires dont rub.

I went to Southern Style Offroad since they are close by to do mine, but here is a video of how they do it. They even sell the blanks they use.

Well I have done a few minor things more for comfort and all not really for performance....

Installed the Grom vline2 ... so far after only a couple of days I am liking it very much! All the extras of modern tech but the stock CD/DVD changer still works as well as the AUX plug!!

I removed the power socket and ran the USB from the Grom down there to be able to stick a USB drive loaded with music and videos to play or hook the phone up for both charging and for use of Android Auto ....
Since the radio and everything was out already and things were getting changed about ... out with the cigarette lighter and in with a dual USB socket with a volt meter as well. It does sit a bit far back to be able to read the meter while driving but when parked you can look down easily enough to check.

Again... while everything was out the Midlands MTX 115 GMRS radio fit perfectly into the ashtray slot.... like dead on perfectly!! Used the ashtray cover to fashion a cover plate for the bottom to cover the gap there and make it as "stock" as possible.

then ran the antenna through the firewall and mounted it with a Midlands MXTA27 Lip mount and put a Midlands MXTA25 3db gain "Ghost Antenna" to help increase the range and usefulness. Also it can be swapped for something bigger if needed or just removed to keep it safe.

If you haven't looked into these GMRS units you really should. As of 2020 and 2021 Jeep Jamboree is now using them as their OFFICIAL trail comms. So if it is getting a push like that it will, most likely, be the most common type on the trail. Especially since it can talk to all the cheap FRS hand held radios plus they have come out with new 5 watt hand held radios as well, but also able to use the higher power stations as well for greater distance as well.

Out with the Old. In with the New. Midland Radio Corporation is the official 2020 communications sponsor of Jeep® Jamboree USA. With the sponsorship comes a transition with CB being replaced by FRS/GMRS two-way radios. This year Jeep® Jamboree participants are still welcome to use their CB...

It will not be better then a HAM radio as far as power and flexibility but it is a lot less daunting to use. There is still a fee you have to pay to the FCC for the higher power portion but the lower ones you can use free for the FRS and the FCC is supposed to be dropping the price for the GMRS from like 70$ down to 30 something for 10 years and covers the "family"

I also unplugged the rain sensor for the wipers... now I am able to set it to how fast or slow I want it to work the wipers ...

What the hell - the starter is under the intake manifold in this thing??? Good lord, that’s crazy. Replaced it on a minivan I drove in HS, and was led to believe that’s generally an easy job.
Good on you for knocking that out yourself!

Toyota 4.7/5.7 liter is under the intake manifold. My 80 series starter in literally within arms reach.

Finally got around to anchoring my rear storage to the floor using the 4 factory tie downs. I just drilled 4 slots in the platform's base above each tie down ring so they could poke through. Then got some heavy duty carabiners I had laying around (not pictured) and stuck them through the protruding tie downs. Got tired of hearing it bounce around while going over bumps a little too fast on the powerline trails and I out this off for too long. It is now secure enough to keep from moving in any direction, and I can pull the whole platform out without any tools if needed.

Also put some c-channel aluminum for 3/4" plywood along the rear edge of the platform. It should keep the carpet from getting worn out on the corner and provide some more rigidity too.

Finally got to replacing front brakes as well as hubs and wheel bearings. Also added some spacers that Ive had laying around for several months. Pretty easy job overall. Both sides plus new fog lights took maybe 3 hours.

Starter replacement. Second hardest task on my gx470 so far. I guess it could be worst if I had a later gx470 with the SAIS. Mine is a 2004.
Be very glad you don't have a VVTI/SAIS engine! My '07 starter replacement took two days! I ended installing a SAIS bypass kit and removed the tubes at the back. The tubes were nearly impossible to take off; I just bent them out of the way to get the coolant crossover pipe off. Such a poor starter placement in an otherwise great engine....and not that long lasting of a starter. Mine was done at 135k. Our other vehicles have gone 200k+ and 20+ years on the original starters with no issues. Maybe it gets "cooked" sitting in that cast-iron valley.

I

Doesn’t look like there are many treads holding on those spacers.
There was about 8 threads holding them on, it just looked off because they weren’t all the way tight in the pic

also here’s a picture I took last night of the new fogs. Going to have to aim them a little better but that’s easy
