Do you want a flashy color or a subdued color? What is the production year of your BJ40?

@reddingcruiser
I have a set of bushwacker’s I never installed. Yours look like “magnum” bushwackers compaired to what I recall mine looking like.:D Do you know if bushwacker made wider version’s? I bet jeep’s pull over when they see your beast coming. I like it. Bet it sounds good too.

I absolutely can not wait to paint mine Aircraft Green, which is a form of Olive Drab. And will put a Keswick Green stripe along it. Along the lines of my concepts below. Just can't wait !!

Do I believe I'll be devaluing my to be uber-cool vehicle, which will be built from ground-up with every single nut & bolt replaced ? - No.

And if not this, then I'll just paint the whole thing Keswick Green. -- It'll be one or the other (there's no OEM color I'm excited enough about for my own rig, and specifically, that of its original color).

I bought the flares about 8 or 9 years ago. The may have changed since then.
It does have a nice tone, but not too loud. I'm long past my youthful, wide-open header days.

I am not real flashy, my bj40 is a 1979 from Costco rico. After stripping the paint I see it was originally light yellow, I do not really like that. I am leaning towards the dune beige 416, I do like the original look also. Mine has the 3b diesel in it that is also getting a turbo put on it before it hits the road. This has been a 15 month project so far and going to paint in about two weeks, thanks for all of the input from everyone! My wife thinks I am being way to conservative with the beige wants me to go with some newer color that gets some attention but that’s not what I am looking for I guess.

Whatever color you go with, make sure you paint everything at the same time. And make sure you keep records of the paint brand they use and the formula. I had my tub painted a year after the bib, fenders, hood, hard sides, doors and windshield frame. Tub is not a match. Then I painted small stuff myself, kick vents, hinges, latches. Those parts turned out to be the third shade of brown on my rig. I do like the brown tones.

Not a Toyota color but I mistakenly had the bezel in with body color parts:hillbilly:

Our 40s come from an era when people weren’t afraid of colors. The Audi we bought last year was offered in 11 “colors” - 2 whites, 2 silvers, 2 blacks, 3 grays and 1 each blue and red. I’m tired of vehicles that look like they are on an old grayscale monitor or B&W TV.

But there are many great colors that are “correct” for a Land Cruiser, especially if you aren’t too fussy about only considering the colors for your year.

While it’s not correct for my ‘64, I really like Cadet Blue from 1970 on a 40.

Oh boy. I thought for sure I had already decided on dune beige (original) for my resto. You have cast me into self doubt. I hate you!!!!!!!! :bang:;)

I don't suppose you still have the part # of the flares by any chance??

Thanks. I want the widest flares I can get. Hope yours are still available. Also could you possibly measure the width for me? Appreciate it very much. CAJ

It’s Capri Blue. I repainted mine the original using PPG which is remarkably close to the 71 paint.
Capri Blue (T310, ‘69-71) is nice. Cadet Blue (T449, ‘70 only) is darker with some gray in it. I could be happy with either one.

I love the blues. Capri Blue, Cadet Blue, & Horizon Blue.

I also agree with those that say stick with the Toyota colors.

"I also agree with those that say stick with the Toyota colors."

... and a lot of people do indeed say just that. . . . But my question is, where does that line start and stop ?

To me, the entire question about "what color is okay" is solidly gray. The answer, if there is one, is completely gradated. For me, there is NO right answer. Especially as hues of a specific color are indicative to so many different variables :gloss vs low gloss = visually totally different outcome; manufacturer type = a potential big difference; amount of UV fade = complete transformation of whatever color; light vs dark primer used = a sometimes obvious effect on a color's depth or hue; etc, etc.). Right ?

And then, there is the gradation of time-period; where, at what point of production does one start and where does one stop ? Five years away from production date? The ONLY CORRECT color for one's vehicle is that of the color code that the vehicle sported when it so proudly rolled out of its factory. Anything else is a "demotion" to that cruiser's integrity & soul. No ?

Do we say, "Okay, as long as the color applied is specific to the vehicle's production year, then all is okay." ?

Or do we instead say, "Okay, as long as the color applied is specific to the 40-Series of Land Cruiser vehicles." ?

Or might we go as far as saying, "Okay, as long as the color applied is specific to the Land Cruiser series of Toyota vehicles." ?
Do we then include the modern FJ Cruiser ?

Or what about those who say, "Okay, as long as it's a Toyota color - but not metallic." ?

And if we drop a V8 or beefy V6 in ours, can we then go metallic, like so many countless others have already done when doing so ?

Or what about those who say, "Okay, as long as it's just not a metallic paint, it'll look good. Don't worry about what car company used it. Just do it !!" ?

Or what about those of us who used... Oh My Gosh... rattle cans - Rustoleum, Valspar, etc ? That Ultra Flat Desert Tan that so many of us peeps seem to like when seeing it applied on someone else's rig ?

You see my point ? - Exactly where does the "It's okay," start or stop ?

In my honest opinion, the ONLY ones who are most stickler on authentic color - are those who have no real love or affection for their own vehicle - - they instead intend to flip their vehicle in the market. Their love is ONLY for $$$. ... the 99.99% of ALL OTHERS on the road - Can Care Less !! ... Can we take that as a Coolio ?

Soooo guess what ?? ...

In my so far observation, there is EXACTLY ONE SINGLE VEHICLE on this board that has had the MOST Support Of Appreciation. And this one vehicle has had a heads & shoulders amount of sought-after lust over that of any other vehicle that I've known of here. The vehicle I speak of is the 1978 FJ48 owned by (or previously owned) & repainted by Robert LaDuke. He painted it the British color Willow Green, which he claimed as being a 1960's Jaguar color; but a variant was later used on Land Rovers as well. And the white on his rig is an off-white from the old Sunbeam cars.

And of all vehicles on this board, I'd say his has the very highest acclaim of approval. He might as well have named his rig, 'Miss Desire.' :

As a follow-up, the '78 in the pic above, painted the British color of Willow Green, perhaps looks most like the Toyota color, 6H9, that so many here on this board also like. But keep in mind, 6H9 is not at all a 40-series color. And Toyota produced it AFTER the 40-series was history.

Hear out your wifes opinions but don't let her do the desicions.
