So the lift on the Cammo Cruiser is work in progress to put it mildly. I've been chasing gremlins since the install. Much more to come once I actually get to that process, but since that truck is currently napping, I decided the LX needed to get back on point as the DD since it rains every day. I've been chasing a squeak that sounds like a motel by the hour rental bed from somewhere in the back axle. Finally decided to do a deep dive.

Parking brake on drivers side was mangled. I knew that, finally decided to repair. You can see where it's missing a piece. Top 2 are DS, bottom 2 PS.

Realized while I was in this process that the DS caliper was sticking and PS was leaking ... balls. DS pads up top, PS on bottom PS pads were soaking wet.

Installed new parking brake hardware. Not fun, but just a little swearing. Old DS components were beat.

PS caliper was fully compressed before I even removed it. Not doing a thing.

Then the day just went right down hill. NAPA had both calipers in stock. DS caliper had the mounting threads painted over so bad it took almost an hour to get the threads to take. Went back to NAPA looking for a tap, no luck. Went to Advance Auto, no luck. M12x1.25 not included in my Harbor Freight set. Finally took an impact to it and got lucky it threaded properly. Mount it up and realize things look off. Spend an hour messing with it. Another trip back to NAPA and seems the wrong caliper was in the box. Pretty much wasted the whole day and now can't finish till Monday when they get a replacement caliper in. I have new pads already, now considering new rotors too just to have it done while I'm in there.

Can anyone say if this little box and wiring is stock? It's on the Cammo cruiser and squeaking constantly as I drive. It did have an aftermarket alarm installed, wondering if this is part of it.

It's on there with Toyota hardware, I'd say it's stock.

Spent the weekend ('til this point) doing an engine tune up and finally finished straightening up wiring for the volvo fan. Plugs and plug wires, dizzy cap and rotor, pcv...all OEM part$. As well as replacing the rubber half moons with some aluminum ones.

Also was a good time to strip the valve cover down to bare metal and repaint. Red is my least favorite color but it fits.

The OEM (and non-OEM) rubber ones don't apparently seal all that well, even with sufficient rtv. In my case I had evidence of oil leaks from the half moons as well as all around the valve cover. Turned out though the PO had the valve cover nuts barely hand tight.

I finally had some time to do the psky heater hose and heater control valve replacement on the 80. I went with silicone heater hoses and breeze constant tension hose clamps. I purchased some really nice 90 ° 1/2" & 5/8" silicone hoses from Pegasus Racing.

You may want to do the hose just to the left of it as well while you are there. Mine went less than a month after I did the PHH.

Thanks for letting me know! Do you know what size tubing you used and do you know where that hose connects to.

I believe it's the same size and similar length to the PHH. It's in the pic of the PHH you posted just to the left. After having my feelings hurt by the PHH I had Toyota do the other hose for me ... cause I'm soft like that.

Also, I have the same constant torque clapms you have and have seen them constantly become loose and need to be re-torqued. Go back over things after a few days and check. Mine may also be caused by the Gates hoses, it's super beefy, so it may be that it just doesn't compress fully on the first try.

Dropped the useless spare and hanger off the LX to shed some weight. Then moved the LSPV setting to actually use the rear brakes now.

Found some rust.

Changed oil and filter today in driveway and quickly remembered what a bad idea it is to do that in high winds! Spent as much time cleaning up the mess as I did actually changing the stinking oil.

My wife learned it’s also a bad idea to take a cute fall photo of our 3 month old in high winds! That said, the results were hilarious.

More tech related - I’ve been taking a break from the FJ40 to work on some shop/garage projects. Working on a small portable welding cart/table/shelf because I’m tired of burning through my wood work benches. Not enough progress there to take pictures of.

Picture worthy project - I’ve also been working on cleaning up this old piece of American Iron.

It’s pretty complete. The run-out is pretty bad because the chuck is shot and it could probably use new spindle bearings. After all - it was built in 1937. Original motor hums along like its brand new though. The worst is a cracked head housing at one of the belt tensioner bolts, but there’s enough meat left to hold a scew and tension. I figured for $50 it was worth taking a chance on, and I’ve been pleasantly surprised so far.

I’m going to throw bearings, a belt, and a new chuck at it, and it will probably run for another 80 years.

not sure if i should post this here or in the let's laugh thread....
but yesterday i had what i can only assume is a true senior moment..or hour or two.
i pulled the cluster out of the 75 to check if all the dash lights were working.....seemed kinda dark at night and i don't recall it being so.
so i found that i had a three lights out....with no power in the printed board to them. excited that i found the reason for the not as bright as i remember dash, i was going all in....i even swapped over a few other clusters i have and still nothing on any of them. after about two hours i was thoroughly stumped and bummed that it looked like an issue in the wiring harness, i started putting stuff back together....when, with the key still in the on position, i bumped the turn signal stalk....


...turns out the turn signal indicator lights and high beam indicator light, only get power at certain times.

Then I finally got the Silver 4Runner A/C back together, it seemed a little bit better, but I think I may have a weak compressor, but I will worry about that next winter, the heat is perfect!

Then about a week after we came back from vacation, we got a new to us 05' Rav4 w/135k Fully loaded, leather, heated seats, and sunroof:

It popped up in our wholesale lot, and a deal I couldn't pass up, plus since I was taking the Stock 4Runner and making it the wheeling rig, I needed my husband in a 4WD I can trust, while the AWD matrix he had is great, it just wasn't big enough for my liking in case of an impact from and idiot in the snow, plus he's always wanted a Rav4 and I get my AWD daily our of the Matrix.

I also did some upgrade to the silver 4Runner, I moved over the grill from the brown truck and installed a powder coated FJ40 emblem I had and also got this cool key fob case for AJT design:

Then a couple of weeks ago, the dreaded check engine light came on for a front A/F ratio sensor. Common for this generation 4Runner, just didn't need it to happen two weeks before inspection/registration was going to expire -_-....

I thought I would work ahead and try to get the old sensor out. After heating and pb blasting the nuts on the sensor I couldn't get a tool on to get them to budge. So I tried to remove that section of exhaust (the front cat) by heating and pb blasting the bolts, one started to loosen, but then got tight, I tired to run it back in but got tight, so I snapped it off and tried the other two with the same results:

The upside to this is fortune, the starter took a dump, So I got a rebuild kit and freshened it up since there is so much room for activities with the cat out of the way:

At 230K I would say it was about time..

Still working on extracting the bolts in the cross over pipe to get the cat reinstalled...

I am curious what the whole starter looks like, what familiarity there is between the engine lines.
