Newbie to the FJ40 world and this group. I have next to no mechanical skills, but excited to learn. All being all that, I do feel quite sheepish posting, but I have no idea what is going on in this pic of my recently purchased 2/79 FJ40. My research (on this site and the interwebs) has not been able to replicate what is shown... ~ two inline fuel filters (?) attached to the frame centered under the passenger door. The bolted piece is obviously leaking albeit at a slow, but steady rate.
Questions:
Is this a stock setup of some sort?
If, indeed, the bolted piece is a fuel filter, why two and at those locations?
If it is not a fuel filter, what is it?
What is the best course of action to remedy the leak?
Lastly, is the location of the plastic filter a bad idea? It seems like a very precarious place to live especially with zip ties.
Cheers to all who endure this post. Appreciate you!

It is definitely not stock.

The black unit bolted to the frame in your last picture is an electric fuel pump.

I don’t see any wires going to it, but there should be some.

Does it run when you turn on the key? You should hear/feel it buzzing when the ignition is on.

If you have a mechanical pump, then maybe it’s there to prime the fuel system? Find the wires, and see where they go.

At least your PO tied the plastic filter up, and out of the way…

Thank you so much, Rocky for your reply & info.
There is at least one wire (I'll investigate further) connected to the now identified electric fuel pump; it's in the plastic flex tubing or whatever that plastic sleeve is called.
I will check if it's running when I turn the key. It very well is and if so the piercing seat belt warning has been drowning it out (as of now, it sounds off even when seatbelt is inserted). And I will trace the wires to their home.
True, that was definitely considerate. At the very least, I will replace them with new ones or some other form of connection.
Thanks again!

looks like an electric fuel pump
wires in loom coming in from the right side
PO's do strange things,
you need to figure out why it's there, no manual pump? other issues?
stock engine?

I run an electric fuel pump to bring fuel up to the carb for a cold start. It's on a switch so it can be shut off when you hear the line load up with fuel. 1. reduces cranking time a lot and 2. redundancy in case of mechanical pump failure. Also, an in-line fuel filter is located before the pump.

So it appears to me the part bolted to the frame is a pump, and obviously the clear plastic canister in line after the pump is a filter. I think the smaller pinkish cylinder threaded into the left side of the pump is a filter also. Looking at the set up, I'm not sure if the pump is leaking or if it's the connections or the hose. The moisture appears it could be coming slightly above the pump and then coating the pump. I would clean the whole area really well then see where the seaping starts.

I had this redundant, and also disconnected, set up in n my 82 when I bought it. I took it all out and replaced my mechanical pump and stock filter- no issues since.

For best results filter the fuel before the pump. That pinkish thing on the pump is sort of a filter, that clear plastic one does 1000% better job. The best part is removing condensation from the gas tank. Once the paper is wet it will not pass gas - so you change out to a dry filter and gas flow again. Put wet filter in the sun for a few days and it will dry out and be as good as new.

On my last fuel transfer unit I built for like $50, the pinkish filter leak in the crimp, I swapped in a new $10+ pump and back in biz.
Switch, fused, filtered 5' suction 20' delivery and 10' power cord that plugs into cig lighter or clamps to the battery.

Thank you for the information. That is exactly what I'd like to do if it's possible... simplify things by removing all of it and starting over with a new mechanical pump and stock filter. Any tips or tricks or issues you ran into when you did this?

Nothing special - really just removed the extra pump and hose and ran it as original. Hose was originally a much shorter run from the tank to the hardline on the frame. The stock filter is located before the mechanical pump kind of below the battery on my 82 (where a clip holds it). The mechanical pump mounts on the block (lower front passenger side) and is an easy replacement job. Do you still have it in place, or does it have a block off plate?

I also replaced all of my fuel supply and return hoses at the time - they were past due for it.
