What 70 series should I be looking for in USA? (3 Viewers)

So, I think there is a lot of BS here:

There are no 7x trucks where you can blast the Eisenhower or maintain speed on the I-70/I-25 corridors. It’s just not going to fũcking happen.

You can pretend to go to Starbucks with either of the powerplants presented: 1HZ/1FZ

If Starbucks goal structure is what you want, either will be fine. You sit back, shift through the gears and enjoy life at 55-65mph.

If you want to blast across the American west like the big boy US Land Cruisers do (100/200/250/300) and have a big boner about doing so, you need to drop a boatload of money in cooling a sub-par engine that was **never meant for this market**…

What are your actual fũcking goals?

Answer that question and buy wisely.

7x series in the US is all about looking cool and driving slow. If you are ok with this and driving secondary roads, then a 7x is for you.

Otherwise you are going to be terribly unhappy with a huge investment in a fücking tractor.

These are the requirements for the 70 series that I want.
1) it needs to be left-hand drive
2) have AC
3) be fuel injected.
4) not a prado I want the heavy duty version

I would prefer a four-door but would settle for a pick up truck or troop carrier.

I have a 2000 FZJ79, with approximately 180,000 km, and it is eligible to be shipped to the USA.

Is it comfortable?
Yes, it's comfier than the 75, but it still has HD leaves that you may need to replace.

1FZ-fe? Same as USA specs FZJ80?
No, it was an updated engine that was released with FZJ100 back in 1998 in our market and other markets like Africa; then, Toyota put it in the updated 70 series in 1999, like J79, J78, J71, and J74. It is significantly better than the previous 1FZ-FE engine, offering more power.

Can you go high speed?
Yes, you can, but the H150 has a higher RPM, so you may need to modify the 5th gear or go with a brand new H152. All options are available from @orangefj45

Painted or not?
No, what you see here is original with original stripes that came from the factory for the 70s in 2000

It is here in Saudi Arabia, and we can ship it by mid-August to mid-September.

I've got two 70 series for sale here in the US.

I'm currently 5800 miles into a trip with my 200 series and a Saudi carbureted FZJ80

I've not been in a situation yet where my 200 has walked off and left the 200 hp carburated 1FZ. It's a gas eater but it will take care of you.

They are both around 200,000 km. Fully built. Fully maintained. Ready to sell.

$50,000 for the shorty. $55,000 for the 75. I'll have FS ads for them soon. Lots more than that invested in both. Freeing up cash to bring more in from Meshal.

The Toyota carburator for these trucks is a marvel of engineering. I'd never replace it. Especially after seeing what it's done on this trip in the altitude.

There is a 1HDT swapped hzj73 in Dallas in the classifieds but the guy hasn’t been responsive.

You are now the prime example of I heard this and I heard that . KZJ rocks as long as you avoid the ones with the steering wheel on the wrong side and I just recommend NOT buying any vehicle with the steering wheel on the wrong side . Same goes pretty much for the LHD 2LT cruisers , I traveled all over Europe with those in the 90's

I think I am still about a million miles ahead of you on 7x seat time and yes you are absolutely right if you want to go fast don't buy a land cruiser ! None of them are fast but most of them get you anywhere in the world and 99% of the ones that traveled the world had a 3B or a 1HZ in it , yes they struggle at altitude , yes you can't pass the semi in front of you that's going 2 miles slower then you but you can go anywhere in the world (in a lhd) and just take it one adventure at a time .

Also if you are prepared to invest in some basic tools and get your hands dirty doing your own work these cruisers are the most forgiving cars to learn on , these are not for people relying on specialty shops to keep them as daily drivers unless they have deep pockets

Out of all the 7x models I have owned here my KZJ73 is the only one happy cruising at 78-80 mpg , even the FT powered HZJ78 troopy I had really didn't care for anything over 75 mph.

Wheel it in UT, CO, NM. Camp out of it. Take my boys. Take the top off. Carry a small fridge. Do some passes around CB. Drive it to work sometimes.

I’ve spent hours avoiding 70. I only do 25 when I have to go to DIA. My commute to work is surface streets. I’ll use a 1/2 ton or my 200 to tow my 28’ trailer when wife comes along or I don’t feel like driving the 7x.

As of 2025, diesel 70 Series trucks that are eligible for import to the US are underpowered, at least by American standards. These trucks were not designed with American highways in mind. Owning one in the US is living life in the slow lane.

It is possible to either swap an engine such as the 1HD, or turbo the 1HZ. The former is not cheap, and involves some serious work. The latter is possible but it involves keeping the engine cool. Both issues have been discussed at length in plenty of threads.

Another option is a gasoline/petrol engine. 70 Series had the 1FZ engine from 1992 to 2009, if I remember correctly. Some carbureted variants have an altitude compensator, which works very well: there is enough power to do 80 km/h or 47 mph at 4000 m or 13000 ft, while keeping 2000 to 2600 rpm. The fuel injected variants respond well to changes in altitude, and go a little faster at 13000 ft.

The 1FZ is thirsty but it has enough low rpm power. If you manage to control your right foot, you can get decent mileage even at altitude.

If you opt for a diesel 70 Series, bear in mind the time and money to be spent in order to make it faster. If you choose a gasoline 70 Series, make sure it has an altitude compensator (or fuel injection) and bear with the fuel mileage and your right foot.

My BJ74 looks cool, is somewhat tractor-like in speed and engineering and it’s old
but
it is not a shïtbox.

Why is everyone in such a damn hurry?
I’ve always viewed the 70 Series as a “go slow and enjoy life” kinda vehicle. There are thousands of vehicles with no soul that can go fast if that’s your goal.
