Were 1975 FJ40 front disc rotors solid?

I picked up a used disc brake FJ40 axle to use for parts for my HJ45 front Drum to Disc conversion. The axle I got has solid rotors on front. Was this a 1975 only fj40 front axle? I see 1976- used vented rotors.

I want to convert to vented rotors and the V6 Truck calipers. Can I convert just by buying 1982 front FJ40 rotors and 1990 Toyota V6 truck calipers? Getting ready to order parts and want to make sure I get the right stuff.

I know I don't have an early mini-truck front axle since the Diff is the larger version.

I read all the Mud and Pirate faqs and could not find the answer for this combo.

Thanks!

75 were drum brakes. If it has disc brakes it was a conversion done later. 76 model was the first disc brakes on the front. Early mini truck had solid rotors.

Your disk brake front axle could have already been converted using solid rotor mini truck parts. I am not certain about the V6 calipers, but I'm pretty sure you can swap in the vented rotors.

OK, must have been converted to the solid mini truck disc then. I will upgrade to the vented rotors and V6 calipers and see how it goes.

Thanks for the reply.

Yes, you can convert to V6 calipers. The will, however, need to be ground to clear steel rims. They use 4 equal sized pistons for theoretical better braking than Landcruiser calipers.

The stock 76 calipers with Chevy (full sized) rear discs will easily stop my 4500 lb truck towing a 4000 lb trailer without the use of trailer brakes. Moral... I feel the upgrade to V6 rotors is unnecessary if your Fj40 rotors are healthy.

V6 4-Runner calipers are Autozone part numbers:
C8464
C8465

Just finished up this conversion and it’ll stop on a dime! I didn’t have to grind the caliper with my stock steelies.

The axle I built for my '71 FJ40 uses FJ60 vented rotors and V6 4-Runner calipers, I believe from a '91. The Birfields/knuckles/etc. are from an '84 mini-truck.

OK, so the combo I will be trying is 79 mini truck knuckles/birfs, 82 FJ40 rotors, 90 V6 Truck caliper, 82 brake lines, backing plate eliminators.

Will let you know how things came together this weekend.

There are two versions of vented rotors. 76-77 mount using 6 bolts to the back of the rotor. 78+ mount with the wheel studs going through and two bolts (8 holes). You'll have an easier time if your discs match the hub.
