Does anyone know if a wood splitting maul can be welded ? I loaned one of mine and now it has a crack on the backside (the flat faced side) where they tried to use it as a sledge hammer. thanks buddy

Not recommended. Tools like a maul head are carbon alloy and tend to be brittle when welded. They are cheap too. Get the person who borrowed it to replace it.

Okay, thanks for the replies. I didn't think it sounded like a good idea. bottom line: loaning out tools sucks

it's cast iron. that takes a lot of care to weld...more skill than 99% home hobby welders can muster up. you could take it to a weld shop and probably get it done, but the repair will exceed the value , many times over

thanks for the reply. I guess it's just scrap now. I think it only cost about $28.000 but now mauls are running 60.00 or more. There's a certified welder with a shop right here but if he has to get 50.00 or more for his time , then it really wouldn't be worth it. The maul even has a big label on it that says- do not use as a hammer to drive steel wedges. Loaning tools sucks.
