welded rear, how hard is it on axle shafts

spiders to side gears.. only do that. Too much heat in the carrier can warp it and cause premature bearing failure.

But do weld the crap out of the spiders and side gears.. Fill fill fill....

Yesterday, I pulled the welded 3rd from my trooper. The troop had a lockright up front and lincoln in rear. The rear was great offroad, but very limited street usage was destroying my rear tires. Also, I couldn't go through a parking lot, neighborhood street, gas station without someon telling me to slow down, because of tires shirping and barking. BTW, if you weld more than the spiders, be careful with the heat. A lot of people warp the carrier flange by using too much heat.

I too use the "Woody" method with great success. I think it drives better than the auto-lockers I have broken in the past...

...kinda enjoy the chirping at the gas station... :D

I used the Woody method and then some. Unfortunetly, the "and then some" cost me huge time. I filled the outside of the spider and side gears and the inside:doh: . Spent 3 hours w/ a file and sand paper clearing the welds for the center pin. I used degreaser, then brake cleaner, then dried everything before I got started. IIRC, I too used a millermatic 175. Turn the heat up and watch'em melt together. Never had a problem.
Kinda enjoyed the head snap from people in the gas station too;p just took it easy on the skinny. You could always send the shafts out for cryo, if you're concerned that much.

hehehe........diff is sitting on the bench, ready to pull the carrier tonight.
hope to be done and in the axle by the weekend.
these late nights are gonna be tough..:frown:

but, it's one step closer to having the 40 back on the road ;)

Hobart Locker

well, i got it done, just need to clean it up.
mace said to fill, fill, fill. so i tried my best to flow the spiders together.

i'll get anothe pic after it's all cleaned up.

rotating the spiders was fun, trying to slide the thrust washer back in was'nt 2bad ;) (you are supposed to keep those in right?)

thanx for all your help guys, i'm sure i'll have to do this again

looks good. Hmmm, melted duct tape, goooodd.

Exactly, nice and tight!

you burn a whole spool of wire in there?

2bad keep me updated on this, i am very interested in the 60 rear axle, why did you decide to go that route, i found a 60 axle and wondering if i should buy it or not.

nice work as always

thanx cam,

i went with the 60 axles for a couple reasons.
1( they are a bit wider, i wanted it to be a bit more stable on the road and trail.
2(( i did'nt feel comfy running the hwys with 1.5" spacers:eek:
3((( whether i take my 60 or 40 wheeling, i now have spare axles for either rig :D

oh BTW, i really did'nt know how much to weld, but like i said before, mace said to fill it up. i just wanted to make sure i did ;)

this was my first attemp at welding a third.......
i cant wait to turn corners :D

chirp chirp chirp

around the corner he goes

what comes first axle or the welds

crack crack crack

hey as far as strength is the 60 stronger than the 40. and what is the total width over the 40, 2.5 inches or so.

i think they're 2.75" wider
still did'nt feel safe with the spacers.
i think, but might be wrong...the front axles may be a bit stonger.....beats me, i just like cutting stuff up and welding it back together...;)

I've run 1.5" spacers on my axles for a few years...busted a lot of stuff...but not those...

strength wise, the 60 housing and 60 shafts are of identical design....zero benefits other than a bit more length to absorb the twist...

I've been running 1.5 inch spacers on the trail (long and often hard trails) and on the road (town and highway) on a couple of different rigs for several years now.

Make sure that they are mounted TIGHT. That is to say REAL TIGHT. Beyond that no worries.

But, with 18 inch wide tires on 12 inch rims, the extra offset that the steering has to fight calls for hyro assist if you are locked up front and fighting the wheel in anything with more traction than very slippery mud without ruts. :(

Mark...

still the main reason i'm doing this is to only deal with one set of spare parts.

post up some of your latest pics

not much to post right now, i've got the rear end semi-torn apart in the garage.
still have to put the third back together.
i'll put new axle bearings in before i put it back together.

waiting for my 55 springs from gumby (should be here next week :D) then i'll do my hy-bred springs on the front.
not sure what the wheel base will be, bit i'll check when i'm done.
