How much does a stock FJ40 weight?

That seems more reasonable. I've seen 4885 but I think that is the max gross weight. I can't believe a 40 would weight almost 5000 lbs empty. Anyone else have any thoughts? Thanks Captain.

And some documentation to support that (from a 1975 Australia-published workshop manual):

Thank you kind Sir. I knew someone would come up with some documentation.

Mine is close to 1000 lbs more than that empty...:D But those numbes seem right for stock.

hey tom is that book cover green i think i have that manual.

i weighed my rig with no hard top no doors and got 1890 kilos = 4167 LBS
i guess big tires , aftermarket roll cage and winch can add some weight.
even tho my 350 chev is suppose to be 250lbs lighter than the 2f

truck ,1890 kilos = 4167 LBS

front axle , 1070 Kilos = 2359 LBS

rear axle , 820 Kilos = 1808 LBS

Yep. I doubt I have even half the collection of toyota publications that I imagine you've got Jake .. but I am pleased to say I have this one.

The trademe/eBay seller disclosed nothing about the substantial water/mould damage this book has suffered (on pretty well every page too) but I still feel I'm lucky to have got it because I've never seen one before and whoever wrote this has obviously extensive experience of Landcruisers and did a lot of research to find information I haven't seen published elsewhere.
And since it was written in this part of the world I find it particularly interesting (even though it seems to be aimed at the American market - concentrating as it does on LH-drive vehicles).

While we're on the subject, anyone know the approx. weight of a 40 body (not just the rear tub)? Wondering if I could lift mine off with an engine hoist.

My '78 FJ40 with a PTO winch and aux gas tank weighs 4450 lbs. I think you'll find that most later FJ40s, when weighed on a scale, weigh more than Toyota claims they do.

An decent engine hoist can handle the weight, but the problem I ran in to is the length of the boom is too short to get to the center of the body, and not enough lift height for it to get it clear of the chassis. A chain hoist on an A-frame would be ideal.

My truck can only tow 6500 lbs. so with these higher numbers I'm running out of room for a trailer.

X2 on engine hoist... Even with 1/8" steel floor in back.
