After a little research and looking at the various cruisers for sale in these parts, I came across a small ad for an LCII - BJ40. No photo, just that is had sport rims and was a 3.0L diesel. Had to wait a while until the guy came back into town, and met up with him, but by the time he arrived it was dark. The car was about as bad as I thought it was gonna be, but still had some character about it. This was the first BJ I had seen in the tin, so it was a learning experience for me.

Grabbed a flashlight and had a good rummage around, underneath and anywhere else I could look. Apart from a bit of body cancer, the underside looks tough enough and still solid. Bit of an oil leak from the tranny and the steering has quite a bit of free play.

Jumped in for a test drive and rattled down the road for a while. Jeez this thing is noisy! Every hole in the road comes up through the cab and I kept looking back to make sure the doors were still attached!

After a bit of haggling and a 20% reduction in the price....OK - I'll take it! "Are you sure?" the owner asked!

So the next day, we took it to the testing centre - all ok there and transferred ownership. The journey home was........interesting. The temp outside was 30oC (86F), but with ominous black clouds looming. I knew the air-con didn't work, so had the windows down and kick vents open. The drops of water on the screen started to become more frequent....and then the heavens opened with a full monsoon rain! Closing the window just made it hotter and I was sweating buckets! Crawling through a traffic jam was not a good start!

Anyway, made it home as the sun was coming back out, and in half an hour or so, it was drying out. Got up the next morning to see if the beast was still there.......it was!!

It is in the workshop this week, to get the steering and leaky tranny sorted out. After that will be suspension, followed by a few weeks in the body shop. I wish I could do the work myself, but have neither time, space or resources!

I'll keep ya posted as to how it goes!

Cheers,

Ian

What I'm seeing looks pretty nice.

Wow looks much better than what I see here in the Philippines unless restored. Haa haa I know all about the noises on bumpy roads. Here in the Pinas even the good roads are like bombed out airfields and my rig sounds like a rolling junkshop. But the noises grow on you and you learn to differenciate between road noise and Uh Oh noises lol. Good find! What part of Malaysia are you in if I may ask?
Welcome to Mud.

Pearly are most of the 40's there original? I mean I know everyone changes trucks to their liking or needs but here in the Philippines most 40's are put together from several years of trucks. Just curious.

I'm only just finding out about the 40's over here. There's a few specialists that work on them around here. I'm also trying to find out what parts are available, but really have a bit of a problem with the language barrier. Most of the workshops are run by Chinese - and I don't speak much Chinese! I'm learning Malay, but it will be a while before I am fluent!

I've just had the suspension re-built and the steering box tightened up. The springs are made up of a whole mixture of different pieces, differing in thickness and some cut to fit! The workshop stripped them down, sorted out the best bits, put in some new bits, paainted them and stuck them back in! I was going to replace them, but they say they will be OK for a while yet!

I intend to keep a record of all the 40's I see on my travels. Where possible, I'll take some more photo's as a record. Check out this one in Selangor.....

Thanks Pearly!

I look forward to seeing more Malaysian 40-series too.

Just the snorkel is on the wrong side for the intake. I saw it at the seller's place yesterday - it is beautiful - all the panels and rubbers are like new!! I did notice a little rust starting at the bottom of the drivers side door though! Asking price is MYR78K = US$26.

Took her off to the workshop yesterday for the bodywork and spraying. I was recommended to go to an old-timer on the other side of town, but when he saw her, he said it was too much for him to take on! "I'm 70+ years old, you know. I think I might die before finishing this one!"

Not a great start! So off to recommendation number 2. This guy saw the white guy rolling up and saw the $$$ signs. Had a quick glance at the beast and said it would be MYR6K just for the welding. Another 3K for the paintowrk, plus the bits n pieces! So all up, thats 9K+ which is about USD3K. Might not sound a lot to you guys, but the wages and currency here are much lower than the States! Bearing in mind, I bought the car for MYR20K, the suspension re-build just cost me 1.888K.

So off we went again, calling in at a few other workshops on the way back. Most are just doing crash repairs, but we then came across one restoring classics and sports cars. Had a look at their works in progress and these guys seem to be doing a really nice job. More welding and panel beating than filling with epoxy or fibreglass!

The price - 3K for the welding and 2K for the paint. Done deal!

I'll try and get some foto's as the work progresses......

Yesssss!! keep the import porn coming!! i wish i could get a BJ :D

Progress so far.....

The guys have just started stripping down and re-welding the worst bits. Some of the filler is almost 5mm thick on this car, so that is all coming out! Why it is so thick, I have no idea. The workshop guys think whoever did the work last time must have been charging for the filler by the kilo!

This rear quarter had eight different patch welds on it! It will all be replaced with a single sheet.
