I noticed my 64 fj40 has a red head. I don't think they were ever red, but I thought I would check to be sure. I vaugly remember seeing one in a build thread and thought it may have been original in the early years.
Thanks!

I've never seen any factory photos or brochures with anything but a black head. Toyota liked to keep things very monotone doubt the would do something as wild as paint the head red :D

What is a red head? Red cylinder cover or red valve cover? Our 63 fj45v has this:

They are talking about the engine head and the color its painted.

I have seen some painted red, and i had one painted orange once. I agree with JP, i think Toyota would stick with black. Added colors are probably done by PO's

The only reason why I brought it up was because my cylinder head is red underneath the black. Then nothing under the red. Probably was black, got rebuilt, painted red. Then later painted black is my best guess.
Thx for the replies !

I was wondering if they even put any paint on the head in the early years. On our 62 we were not able to find the tiniest spot of paint on the head, while the block was black.

Now I'm thinking about it. I remember I read once that sometimes the heads are painted after they are machined. So you can see it is machined. I think I read it on mud somewhere.

only time i've ever seen red heads on any engine, they were all painted by shops that rebuilt them, but my knowledge is slim compared to the number of engines out there ;)
