When I did mine, my arm/disarm switch went directly to the ground side of the winch. The switch I used was a fog light switch that lit up when the swithch was in the on (winch armed) position. Doing it this way also enables/disables the hand held controller. Therefore, the winch can only be operated when your incabin arm/disarm switch is in the on position.

Doesn't energizing both relays of the winch controller create a dead short across the battery?

I'm going to say no as nothing happened the 2 or 3 times my finger rolled across the 2 buttons. However, it's possible that I never really made contact with both at the same time. I'll take a look at the switches if I remember today, but it might be pretty hard to push both to make contact unless you have giant fingers. I really don't know.

I will say that it has worked a charm for the last 10 years or so. If your at the FG this year we can discuss over a cold beverage or 3.
 
Can the in cab controls be set up without using the DPDT? I have not researched the WARN hand controller yet, but it would appear that the in cab controls can function like the hand control if it does not require the addtion of the relays.

If the Warn uses a 3 wire control (my Warn does) as long as the switch has the rating I dont see any problem with a SPDT switch.

I just ordered a rear window switch from a 4runner with plans on using it for my winch control. I dont see why it wont work.

Any input from someone with experience with a 4runner switch?
 
I have the 5 wire. First Toy has been a tremendous help, but I think I am overlooking something with the relays. When I get a chance I will put this on the bench and test the switches and research the WARN remote function a little more carefully. Thanks Phil.
 
The SPDT switch is for the ground switch? It's either on or off, the cab switch is powered 12V with "in" and "out" capabilities. In the diagram the WARN 12V power (white) is very difficult to make out, and the black and green wires control the direction of the wire. If this is not correct, please correct for tech.

The SPDT is named "Dash Switch" on the diagram switches the hot side of the coils on the relays that control the in&out.

The SPST is named 'switch" on the diagram provide the ground side of the relays and complete the circuit to operate the in&out relays.

Looking at the diagram the "factory remote does basically what the 2 switches in the diagram does.

When you plug the hand held control 2 of the pins complete the ground side, the yellow is the common +12 power, the black is the control for out relay coil, the green is the control for the in relay coil.

The diagram shows controls only. What is does not show is the large wires that go from the relays to the motor.

Relay are nothing more then electrical power switch with a high current careering capabilities.

Print the diagram for better clarity.

Looks like I will be using the rear window momentary contact up & down switch from a 4runner to do the same thing and provide me with in cab winch control.
 
The solenoid pack is looking for commands to fire the solenoids for either in or out. The current required to do so is minimal. All you have to do is look at the size of the wires in the remote cable to figure that out. In the later 5-wire setups the ground is floating in order to prevent vandals from operating the winch.
 
Thanks Dan! So, basically the 4Runner antenna switch is used to deploy the winch, and the on/off rocker style switch is used to interupt the ground removing the need of DPDT relays? Researching WARN controller has not answered the question that I have about the controller and that is does it have relays built into the remote? If not, then basically the in cab wiring is exactly the same the WARN OEM remote and not a big deal. Either way it is just a matter of bench testing the operations of each switch and wire accordingly. This project may get pushed to the weekend. I will report back with pictures and a write up. :steer:

SNAFU

I went back and forth if I should even post this snafu, well it's tech and things (regardless of how careless) happen. In the name tech and being committed to getting this "in-cab" controls installed I believe that I have burned up the windings in the winch motor.:bounce: I have isolated the problem to the winch motor by applying 12V+ to F1 and then contacting F2 and A with the motor ground and nothing. Trying the other combination and 12V+ to F2 and then contact F1 and A and again no response from the motor. This sanfu has come at my own oversight, and well determination to get this feature installed in the rig. I have contacted a local WARN dealer who has a replacement motor for $189., available next week. So until then I will be removing the existing set up to confirm no further damage. Thanks to everyone who has chimed in on this thread as I am still determined to finish what I originally set out to accomplish.

Way to stick with it Josh despite this set back! Keep us posted on the repair and further progress of your control system.
