Has anyone come up with a way to draw air from inside the cab for the heater? Seems like, in certain situations, (below freezing temps) drawing ice cold air from outside the vehicle and trying to heat it appreciably in the short time it's passing through the heater core is not very efficent.

My rig is a '72. Perhaps the later models had a recirc system? if so, is it easily transferred to a '72?

Maybe I just need some electric socks.....:)

Yep, later trucks have a damper that closes off outside air and recirculates inside air. Didn't realize earlier trucks don't have them.

I'm sure you can retrofit a later set-up into an earlier truck. Anything is possible with time and effort. Don't know if it's worth it. How about adding a rear heater or upping your thermostat (190 is available).

At times, I've considered putting a 60-series heater under my 40 console, so that I would have the rear heater and not lose valuable space in the rear bed. A 60 heater would also be plumbed under the truck, so you wouldn't have heater pipes going through the passenger footwell (I've heard of them bursting; no fun).

This seemed like a great idea as I tried this myself but the heater is 8" which is too wide by a couple inches. If someone has retrofitted a 60 series heater in I would be interested in how they did it as I have the parts just sitting around.

your 72 should have a flapper that recircs the air instead of drawing outside air. On the early heater blowers, the shaft for the flapper door rusts to the door and they dont like to move, so some disassembly, cleaning and one of AATLAS1X's kits and you will be in good shape.

Also, cleaning and lubing the vent cable will make a big difference in the operation of the flapper door. Work some white lithium grease down the cable and the are much smoother.

there is a way that is hard to describe without a picture but poke the cable and wire end through the corner of a ziplock(not the ziplock corners), tape up ziplock to cable, spray lube into ziplock, and reseal. squeeze ziplock and it will force lube down the cable.

Also motorcycle shops sell cable lubers that clamp on the end of a cable and a spray can nozzle fits into it so you can blast lube down the cable. Messy but works awesome.

My "V" cable is free and the door operates fine. I didn't realize it was a recirc though. I thought it was just a fresh air vent, which seemed a little much with the two kick panel vents and the cowl vent.

So, if I understand correctly, Knob is "in" flapper is closed-this is the recirc position?

I feel like an idiot. I can rebuild an engine or weld up a frame, but I don't know what my "V" knob does!

Yep.

AATLAS1X's kits work wonders on the recirc door foam. Cuts down on unwanted cold air if you get the chance to install a kit of his. Well worth the warm air.

Cant tell you how much difference it made. I never use the rear heater now.

Can anyone post a pic of this???? I have a 75 and didnt realize it has a recirc. I too have no idea where it is. I also have the 180 deg thermo and think I should switch to 190, Thanks, Matt

Off Topic Rear Heater Option...

At times, I've considered putting a 60-series heater under my 40 console, so that I would have the rear heater and not lose valuable space in the rear bed.

Later model 40's have the heater under the console (my 84 does). $OR lists it as "8/80-1984 40 Series With Optional Center Console Heater".

They don't get smacked around like the older ones, and have a temperature control lever (#10 below) .

What's not nice is that the fan is only on when the front heater switch is on high - I've got a 60 series heater switch which fits nicely in the plated-off 40 console hole (#12 below) which'll be wired to run the rear heater independent of the front switch one day...

Cable #7 controls the damper (inside blower enclosure, behind screen #12). Look at the firewall from the passenger footwell.

Middle heat control knob (3 knobs, #5 above radio), labeled "Fresh Pull". Pull for outside air, push in for inside air recirc.
