I have a new addition to the family: I have a (new to me) 1981 BJ42 imported from Italy. I bought it from Missouri, so not involved in the importing. I would like to know when it was built and is it an 81 or 82 model. Vin is: BJ4200901353. When I look up compatibility buying parts there is no 81 BJ42 with a 3.4L engine (3B) listed, I haver to go to a 1982 to get the right engine combination. Can anyone shed light on this? I would like to know the month of production and is it an 81 or 82 model. Thanks!

Doesn't it have an ID tag on the driver side front door pillar?

No, it does not. I have a 1971, I know the tag you are talking about. On eBay there are BJ's without any data plates(except the frame) I felt lucky to have the one in the engine compartment, but it doesn't tell the month of build or model year.

I have one 82 bj42 in Europe (Finland) and here you found 81 Bj42, what says the plate? JT1VOBJ42......?

Very interesting. Could it be an 82? Any way to narrow down the build Month?

Well from the information above, yes; it could be an '82: 08/80 to 09/82.

If it was a 2F we could narrow it down but I wouldn't know where to get engine serial numbers by date for a 3B.

If it was a RHD would be easy to tell between a 81 and 82. RHD had the insert dash starting 10/81 (82 model). I know some markets were a little different on what changes they got but 10/81 was the start of the switch on the A pillar for the dome light. In the US that the easiest way I know to tell between a 81 and 82. The A pillar tag started 3/69 but that was in the US. Because a cruiser from another market doesn't have one doesn't mean it was removed. Australia had a second tag under the hood installed in Australia and never a A pillar tag.

The engine is: 11411-58010. With a big TEQ and 3B beside it!

That is the block part number... not engine number ... engine number (I think) was on a ledge between the exhaust manifold?

Post up pics of your euro cruiser .... what makes you think you do not have an 81? Because some online thing is confused?

Btw you have a CDK ... lot of world got to build their own cruisers... USA got stuck with Japan building everything (mostly)
