i dont buy that,,,, i have a magnaflow, one of the race series, its a straight through design so there isnt anything to impede flow, does a great job quiting down the exhaust note.

Any muffler will impede flow compared to a straight tube.

The 4BT is loud on its own. So loud that exhaust sound is the last of your concerns.
 
How are the brakes? I understand that the 4bt does not up out enough vacum to power the brake booster.

I am very curious as to their performance!

run a hydroboost setup...that is what I pulled off my frito-lay van....

This is a great thread. I didn't even know it was here. Did you post something in 80's tech? Lot of 80 owners would be interested in this.
 
Did you change to manual locking hubs?

Did you look into other t-case adapters so you could run something besides a D300 or an atlas?

Yeah, we put in 79-85 solid axle hubs with Bobby Long cromoly hub gears.

We are running an FJ62 split tcase with a Downey 700R4 to Split case adapter. Not a D300 or Atlas. Those would have been my preferred choice though since they are stronger IMO. The D300 may have had an issue clearing the tranny pan with the HP third up front though. The Atlas would be the better bet since its wider.

The slit case we used works just fine though for the application.
 
Question about the hydro boost brake, will it just bolt into my FZJ80? IS it a new master cylinder or something to add to the master? I am doing a 6.2 diesel conversion and from what I understand I need a power steering pump with a line from it to the hydro boost for the brakes? Rusty
 
Here's a great pic I grabbed off the net, not from an fj80 as far as I know. The hydroboost unit replaces the vacuum booster and then the master cylinder bolts onto that. My hydroboost unit had the master cylinder on it so if you are looking for one try to get both parts. You will probably have to make an adapter plate to mount it on the firewall, adapt it to your brake pedal, and make or adapt hoses. Then adapt your brake lines to the new master cylinder.

Not to be rude but the last thing we need is more people and 80 owners knowing about it. There is already a shortage of engines that has shot the prices through the roof, and a lot of people are expecting the swaps, particularly with used engines, to go flawlessly and their vehicles to run as reliably as before when they were built by Toyota. I am not knocking the conversion at all (I'm on my second one and third diesel swap) but so people know what they are getting themselves into, and particularly the costs..

I don't think we have much to worry about. 99.5% of people don't have the ability to do such a swap on their own. I know the people I talk to about it have a heart attack when I mention what it costs to get one done. Parts alone run well over $10K when you factor in the 4" lift, tranny, motor, Tcase, adapters, radiator, intercooler, etc, etc etc. Labor is around 30 days also.

Most people just cannot fathom spending that on a vehicle that is 15-25 years old even when they are taking delivery of a pretty much new/resealed, or rebuilt drivetrain and suspension.

You can also use the vacuum pump that comes with a 6.2. Just plumb the line straight into your stock booster. They mount like the alternator and are driven by a belt. The drawback is when you lose a belt, you lose brakes.

No you don't, just lose the booster, like 80 % of the brakes.;)
 
My experience with this involved a 91 Ford 350 Crew Cab that would toss the alternator belts at 6 month intervals, taking all the other belts with it. I'm sorry but when you weigh 8500 lbs with fuel and tools and are pulling a trailer that weighs another 5000, loosing the booster makes it so you cannot stop safely. you are right not all the brakes but enough to make you suck the seat into your ass.
 
I finally have an engine, transmission and transfer case adapter so I am ready to get serious. Sorry, I am going the GM 6.2 route so I am asking the same question on both posts. Anyway, I think I am probably going to go with a hydroboost brake system, the vacuum pump scares me a bit, although I can't remember the last time I had a belt break. I guess routine maintnence must work. I have a couple other questions, first is cruise control? Has anyone hooked up cruise control with their diesel conversion? Also what about a/c, I am thinking it will be easier to make a bracket and use the Toyota unit instead of adapting the gm compressor to the rest of the Land Cruiser system. Any ideas on that?

I'm not sure how many thing you need adapt with a GM compresor .. but IMOP ( and in my little wisdome ) AC compresor it's AC compresor .. nothing really to worry about generic, Toyota or chevy stuff ..
 
Does anyone know if the fittings are universal for AC compressors? It would be really easy to use a GM bracket and compressor (assuming it is on the correct side) and just hook up the Toyota lines to it!
