Have a 67 FJ40 with an F block and 2F head...The head gasket went on it..Since I've gotten it back the #5 intake valve nut keeps breaking loose and causing a very loud tick..After adjustment it will run fine for about 50 to 100 miles then break loose again normally after cold startup sometimes while running it will start ticking...What would be the cause and what would be a remedy to fix this?

First, check for bent push rod. If all is good use a dab of Blue loctite.

The shop has been very good about re adjusting the valve..They said that the push rods are good...And that having solid valves is the problem..They need constant readjustment..They say to drive the crap out it so they can see if the stud is coming out of the head...I think they would of known by now...It's the 4th adjustment...

Drive it until it fails? Not a good strategy.

I agree and have learned my lesson in other ways about driving it to see of it fails...I will have the rods looked at next time I take it in to have valves adjusted or may have another shop look to get a 2nd opnion...I just don't understand why it's doing it now and not prior to the head gasket going out I never had valve trouble before that...

Something tells me you are working with second-hand information. If you REALLY want to know what's going on, you will examine the parts yourself. See if the same amount of screw is showing above the lock nut on that screw as on the others.

You could also have a cam lobe or a lifter that is failing. A fresh head rebuild, with new or even reshimed valve springs could have put more load than the old cam and lifter could handle after FIFTY YEARS!

Best
