It's getting close to Valentine's Day again so who is in for a Flagpole trail ride in Feb? In years past we usually do it around V-day so pick which weekend works best for you and we will go with that.

We've stayed at a motel that's nearby in years past, so if you want to stay out that way the hotel is: The Village Inn
The place offers a nice breakfast in the mornings and not far from Turner Ashby High school to meetup for the trail ride.

Trail ride: Switzer Dam > Flagpole > Union Springs
We would go from Turner Ashby school and head towards Switzer Dam - Flag Pole - Union Springs.

Post up if you're interested, it's been a while since I've been on any sort of trail and definitely plan on being there for this one.
@PRADO3 redemption for the 4Runner?

Feb 12th Trail ride:

Feb 19th Trail ride:

The first year I did this with the group we showed up on Friday evening to the hotel and went out for food and drinks. Wheeled Saturday then did the same Saturday night and all went home Sunday.

It'll just depend on who all goes and how long they stay for, but wheeling has only been Saturday.

@PRADO3 redemption for the 4Runner?
Just picked her up. RCI skids, 1” front spacer lift and pizza cutter 33s incoming. That’ll lift the front 2”, the back 1” and protect the dangly bits.

The Easter Bunny is resurrected and ready for redemption.

PS- I definitely recommend Steven Toyota. I had a great experience with them. They were super easy to work with and did not get their panties in a bunch over the needed repairs.

I missed the part of the 4Runner needing some repairs - what happened?

The excitement starts here…

Dec 18th wheeling! - https://forum.ih8mud.com/threads/dec-18th-wheeling.1270335/post-14205604

Long story short- a “not very big at all” rock came into contact with the bottom of the truck and wreaked havoc. Front diff cracked and got pushed up into the bottom of the engine. Shut the motor off and had to have a club member pull it down the mountain and flat bed it to the closest Toyota dealer. It took about 6 hours from hitting the rock to truck being safely on the flatbed. Bit of an ordeal and quite a surprise actually. Didn’t think a small rock on a flat road could completely takeout a brand new Toyota truck. It was a shocker and an advertisement for the ever recommended aftermarket steel skids. Also an advertisement for non cellphone GPS and the ability to use a radio while on a mountain to get a tow truck (driving out 10+ miles to get cell signal and call a tow wasted several hours). A few other lessons in there too- like always have a spare engine just in case.

One really cool thing was that the 4runner’s electric brake and steering system allowed me to have full brakes and power steering while being pulled down the mountain strapped to another truck. That made it pretty darn easy to maneuver and took a lot of stress out of the recovery effort.

Looking forward to this ride!

Stops in town if you arrive early:
Ethanol free gas at the Bridgewater Southern States, etc. Pure-Gas.org : Map of Ethanol-Free Gas Stations in Virginia - https://www.pure-gas.org/extensions/maps.jsp?statecode=VA
Beef Jerky, baked goods, chocolates, trail mix.. etc. Shops Directory - The Dayton Market - https://www.thedaytonmarket.com/shops-directory
Rockingham COOP has a nice sporting goods/hunting section.. Sporting Goods/Firearms - Rockingham Cooperative - https://www.rockinghamcoop.com/sporting-goods-firearms/

(Most small shops tend to be closed on Sunday)

The techs @ Steven Toyota did good work on our 4Runner - timing belt swap, and transfer case issues.

I am in, should be able to accommodate any of the dates unless I am summoned out of town last minute.

ugh @PRADO3 - bummer on the rock encounter. It always is difficult getting to know a different vehicle. I'm sure the ol GX would've slipped right over that. Glad that you were able to get it down the mountain ok.

I have put in an order for 12" of snow for the Feb run, I hope it comes through. For those wanting to camp, let me know and you all can stay at my place.

Thanks- yeah, the GX never gave me any problems on the same trails- even stock! Def makes me want to swap this 5th gen out for a 100 or 200.

12" of snow would sure make it interesting... would you actually run these trails if it's snowy?

You gonna bring your new 5th gen? Maybe stick an RCI skid under it first?
