saw this on the nccrawler board

"Hello,

I was at Ruby Tuesdays today and saw three men wearing Croatan National Forest shirts. I asked them questions about allowing Jeeps in The National Forest and they said that it is not going to happen. They did just open (well, April is the opening date) a new ATV OHV park there. They cleaned up the trails and made it pretty nice they said. They are still working on prices, wheather it will be a pass or a money drop box. But they are sure there will not be any place for a Jeep to go for at least 5 years. That is how long the deal is lasting this time. So if any of you are still here in 5 years (I will be back in Texas on my ranch in Feb '07) you may still be able to get OHV trails there for Jeeps. The reason they are not going to allow it right now is because of the lack of money to maintain it properly. There is one thing that can out of it. They said they still dont have enough to even keep up with the trails for the ATVs now.

After talking with them for a while they asked about my Jeep and things like that. I was able to talked them into letting my Jeep in to "help keep up with the maintanice."
They have to ad me on as a voluteer but they said it would not be a problem. I told them there were a lot of groups that would do exactly what I proposed. They only countered by saying the soil would not last long with multiple vehicles on it. That was the other reason why they are not allowing large vehicles. They gave me a lot of information about what the future plans are for the Nationaly Forest. Dont expect URE to be open for very much longer. I told them that as of now everyone has to go all the way to URE. They replied by saying take advantage while you can. Upon questioning they explaned that someone, somewhere (in D.C.) does not feel like using our National Forest for OHV is a good. He said not to quote him but I will. He said, "URE will most likely not be an OHV for full size Jeep in the very near future." He said that ATV will most likely be the only vehicles allowed. He said they just dont do so much damage to the soil. I told him that the trails in URE are made for Jeeps and not ATVs and he just said they will address it when they get to that park. I kind of looked at him funny and said something to the extent of, are you the one that makes the decision. They guys next to him said, "pretty much."

So after talking to him a little more I found out this guys is actually one of the rangers that goes around an make desicions about the parks in N.C. Cool but he was not very 4x4 friendly. He looks like the kind of guy that drives a prius!!!!

Anyway, he does not have the final decision though. He send everything up the chain."

man, oh man.......... I hope this is just a rumor :crybaby:, I just keep waiting for them to shutdown Tellico since it is in the Natl forest system too.

It seems of late all our trails are starting to disappear......

These grumblings have been going on for a very long time and sooner or later they'll stick and take effect. There is always some half witted, extremist group pandering in Washington for regulation change that benefits the environment (per their standards, perceptions and extremist goals). The ridiculous part is, most of these numb skulls have never been to NC or Uwharrie for that matter and don't know the first thing about the OHV areas we enjoy. All they need is a politician's ear who is looking for a segment of votes or a lobbyist who is trying to make a name in a certain community and they have some fire power. To these extremist freaks, it's all about the "cause".

Times like this make the voluntary trail maintenance efforts all that much more important. It provides users of the area (like us) good visibility and demonstrates that we care about our public lands and resources. It also shows that beyond "caring" we are willing to invest our time, energy and money to help preserve and protect our environmental resources and that we understand and will happily serve as good stewards for our lands.

I've been with other groups for trail maintenance days / weekends at Uwharrie and it's a productive, positive experience. Maybe we can organize a UC weekend of trail work, maintenance, upkeep, etc. Not much wheeling gets done on a work weekend but camping is usually free and we can take some time to help give back to a resource that could essentially be gone tomorrow.

If there is enough club interest (10-15 folks), I'd gladly take the lead on making calls and sending e-mails to organize a UC trail maintenance weekend. Like always, it's a coordination thing and if there is some interest maybe the esteemed Mr. Virgo could do a poll about ideal dates, times, participants, etc. Maybe getting another club to chip in could boost participation too...

Additional note: There is similar activity currently going at OBX right now. The extremist fruit loops are very close to getting 4x4 access to all beaches closed. They started with one small objective, got a foothold and then spread out a wider net to accomplish a greater restrictive measure that has no merit from an environmental impact perspective. We need to remain vigilant in the battle against these whackos.

It has happened everywhere here in Florida. :flamingo:

I have a feeling the golden days of 4-wheeling are gone for good, there is to much attention being givin to these enviormental extremists.......... and they are going to stop anytime soon.

I have spent hours looking at USGS maps of our areas close to home looking for trails for the club, that were made around 1980. The are tons of jeep/4wd trails that show up on the USGS maps, probaly somewhere in the neighbor hood of 30+ trails and all of them to my knowledge have been shut down 20 years of so........ very discouraging :crybaby:

I know i am up north of you all but i would dang sure be willing to help out with what I think Andy was talking about at the URE. I try to get there at least twice a month as it is.

I also belong to URE.com and NC4x4 .com and will search around there and ask some questions about this.

yeah Andy if you schedule a URE work day, I'm in. I know that RK has been involved with a few and he could probably give some good insight on who to contact.

I wonder if they make those statements about ATVs realizing they are the rouge element in blazing trails and bypasses since they are unable to go over things we can. Look at almost every bypass and rouge trail and you will see the ATV track width. Damn cockroaches of the forest I tell you!

Holy old thread, batman!

The Ranger at URE was the facilitator at the Tellico Stakeholder's meeting in August. She's pretty OHV friendly so I am not sure who has the power here. The danger is if the Forest Service caves at Tellico...then URE and everywhere else is open season for anti-access groups.
