Upgrading the alternator??

You could try http://www.mechman.com/. I'm running one of their 175 amp alts in my FJ-62. It's based on a Ford case. They turned down the pulley as small as it could go without the belts bottoming out to help out with idle output. This helps but not enough when I'm running a lot of accessories at idle.

My plan is to flip the A/C idle up circuit in the ECU based on a voltage sensing switch (below 13 volts apply voltage to the A/C pin to kick the rpms up). At A/C idle (~850 rpms) I get 14 volts with lights, wipers, heater on full... Unfortunately I've had too many other projects going on to do more than just test the circuit and confirm that this pin just see battery voltage when the A/C compressor clutch is engaged.

I will do some measurements over the weekend... hole to hole and ask about the pulley. If the holes line up, then it is just a matter of a small spacer for proper alignment.

The stocker is 80, and you will probably have no issues with it. A good 130 amp Tundra unit can be had for under $100. I scored mine on car-part.com from a wreck with 3k miles for $100... looks new.

Of course, what I'm looking for is plug a play. With the type of batts I'm running, I like the set point at 14.4 volts, although I would prefer around 14.75 volts. Will have to talk to these people and see if this perimeter is adjustable.

I think I'll go with the the quote I've got and then pray a lot. I've got alot of crap hooked to the battery.

I have posted it here before. IIRC it produces 75-80 at idle, and has a limited lifetime guarantee.

I am not affiliated with them in any way. I have a couple of their HO alternators on other vehicles and have been very satisfied with them.

Larger case with bigger fans and other components make this a nice unit. Pully bolts up.

Offset of the lower mount is perfect.

No picture of the upper mount, but the pulley side offset is correct. Mount is deeper. Third ear mount could be easily removed if required. Plug on the back has 4 wires instead of 3, 4th wire for....???. Main charge wire will bolt up. Looks quite do-able with minimal or no mods to the alt. or brackets... as soon as I find all my bracketry it will get test fit to the engine.

Brian, did you ever make any progress with this? I'm debating doing some R&D on this myself, since I feel that R&R'ing the stock alt isn't going to suit my needs for very long with all of the electrical accessories I've got going on.
