Just got my first Land Cruiser ('92 FJ80) and am based out of Raleigh. First project this past weekend was fixing the rear left door window (bad motor). Opened up the door and discovered a 2 by 4 holding up the window. Whoever did it knew what he was doing, it was wedged in there real tight!
Pretty straight forward. Next on the list: birfields & knuckles!

Welcome! That is one of the best repairs I have seen.
wow - i've seen rear hatches with 2x4s propping them up - but never a window.

New U Joints in and we are still getting vibration on the diesel pusher RV.
Symptoms:
Drive shaft was the first check. Done. Pretty sure not joints or even balance on it now. No marks of any changes to weighting on shaft.
The rear axle also had fluid coming out of the diff breather. We are going to change the gear oil on the axle.
Here were some other ideas that I had based on feedback on similar thing on these boards and from many of you on other similar symptoms:
Pretty sure it is not tire balance, as I don't think it would ONLY happen when going up hill under load.
Symptoms:
- vibration under load up hill - hard to tell at slow speeds, may not even happen then
- consistent, but relatively fast vibration

- Pinion bearing on the differential
- Engine motor mounts
- Transmission mounts
Pretty sure it is not tire balance, as I don't think it would ONLY happen when going up hill under load.
I think you're on top of it. Drain the rear end fluid and see if you have any shavings in the fluid.
For your mounts, you could use a jack and jack up on the transmission pan or oil pan to see if there's more upward movement than normal (test to see if the mounts are broken). Otherwise, they should be fairly inexpensive to replace.

No metal on the magnetic drain plugs - both the drain the fill on the diff have magnets, which I thought was nice.
Fluid in the Diff looked REAL light almost like a diesel oil like a 45 grade.
Put in new 85w140 high performance.
If the pinion bearings are bad, and they previous owner didn't want to deal with it, I could see him swapping gear oil and getting rid of any shavings.
The oil smelled horrible, but not sure what it was vs Toyota stuff that I know :\ Looked pretty good - didn't smell burnt to me, but i don't think I would definitely know that unlike a transmission where you can really tell.

I've been up and down the road a time or twenty in the 62 with the crate LS3 for test drives and woo hoo! 430 HP and 425 ft/lbs is fun
So I was reading some information on the LS3 package and what pops up in an add when I go to check E-mail afterward?

Couldn't hold pressure, couldn't lift the weight, or what?
It worked fine until it bulged out to one side.
I think-
The bag had been holding moisture and then seating in the sun on my roof probably don't help it deteriorated the plastic enough to weeken it.
So now I have to adjust my hi lift jack mount on my rear bumper.

When it pours it rains!!! On my way to work, stopped to gas up and go to start and nothing. From what I researched it is highly likely to be the high pressure oil pump or "hpop" since the truck still cranks normal but just doesn't start.
Well I was planning on bullet proofing this winter but I guess now i am just going to get it done now because i would hate to pay the labor price twice.
I was planning on a v8 swap for the lx450 but now that is going to have to wait.
Already contacted a few shops in the Raleigh area.
Sorry to hear it Del. Would be more than willing to give you a hand bulletproofing if you were doing it yourself, having just done mine earlier this year. It's not that bad.
If you're having it towed to your house, I would like to come by to help diagnose. Could be the HPOP, but could be other things too. Labor for replacing the HPOP isn't nearly as bad as replacing the head gaskets, and the HPOP doesn't need to be removed to bulletproof (although the turbo does, but that's easy).
