Got my squirrel-cage fans mounted to the ceiling today. I need to make some baffles to distribute to the far end of the garage a bit better, but damn does this thing put out some wind

@Fort Knox and I did some work on the 4Runner. Got this plate mocked up:

My neighbor stopped by today and said "here, play with this for a few days"....

I'm going to scope the cylinders and the frame rail on the 40. As well as the cylinders and gas tank on my CB175.

It's pretty slick. Gotta love automotive tech toys.

Got @Fort Knox 's frame stuck back together last night. Took quite a bit of muscle to get it lined up correctly, damn mangled frame end, lol. Still have plenty of welding and plating to go.

Hauled my winch over to @Mtbcoach 's house to use his blast cabinet and TIG to do some aluminum welding. I hate welding cast but it came out alright. A grinder and paint makes me the welder I ain't.

Painted the parts with some nice industrial enamel, ready for reassembly:

I've not tried to weld cast iron before, but welding (old) cast aluminum is horrible.

Series 15 industrial motor on my 8274 (70865, yes I know the model number on the motor is different, not sure why). Should be a screamer now:

This motor has thermal overload protection. These small wires out the bottom get wired into the control circuit for the solenoid. If wired correctly, when the motor overheats, the thermal circuit opens, preventing the control circuit from switching the solenoid (or contactor) on. Pretty slick and is a feature not found on many winch motors.

Since the parts were all clean, I could work inside in the AC:

First attempt putting the brake assembly together, I got a couple of the brake balls out of the groove, but I nailed it on the second attempt.

Did a quick test drive to make sure everything works as expected, filled it with oil 30wt non-detergent oil (I used 12oz, 6 just didn't seem enough), and popped the top on with hylomar. I didn't do the grease zerk mod, or the case drain/fill mods. I figure I wouldn't remember to maintain it anyway and popping the top half of the case off is a matter of removing three bolts, that's it. Doing that is easier than drilling/tapping for drain and fill holes IMHO.

I think I'm going to sand the ribs to make them silver, but that's pretty much it!! Fun little project, can't wait to test it out.

Tore down my 8274:

My downfall on mine was replacing the needle bearing on the brake cross shaft. That took me 2 hours to figure out after the back of the bearing broke off. I had a good quart of water in my winch. Amazed at how little oil they recommend.

Fortunately mine came out without too much fuss. I did partially crush a new one trying to drive it in by hand so I got to do that twice.

First day of my co-op at Rheem, I'm told my first project is to find a new Borescope for the dept. I was given a conservative budget of $25,000. Always fun spending other peoples money.

Put my winch on yesterday while @Fort Knox was working on his 4runner and @mtweller was working on Dozer! Didn't have to trim the grill as much as I suspected I might. I'm stoked!! I hooked up the solenoid from my old winch to this one to spool the synthetic line. Plan is to mount the contactor under the hood with a hardwired remote control.

I used an auto zone loaner which maybe wasn't my best choice but was okay. The best it could pull was 26 inches and I was hoping for 30. To do over again I would borrow one from the "physics department" at school. Since I was there borrowing the manifold anyway I went with the pump also.

Edit: A thanks to @beno for the proper parts recommendation. Came pre-oiled and bolted right up.

I did this on my wife's car last week. I could only get it to pull 26 too.
