I'm starting the search here in Japan for a replacment for the 2b currently running in my truck. I have a supplier I just need to tell him what i want. When it comes in he'll call me. I was thinking 3b and the turbo it but he does come across 13bt's albeit not often. Most of his engine/tranny/transfer combo's run in the 150,000 to 250,000km range. I'm leaning toward the 3b and going with a new turbo on it but I could just as easily- and probably for about the same price, pick up a 13bt and if need be replace the turbo on it. Any thoughts on pros/con between the 2?

There is no reason to pick a 3B over a 13BT.

What year/model did the inline pump finish?

Pete

A 13BT out of a 85-89, BJ71/74 should be an inline pump. I think the best part of going 13BT is that you eliminate the pre-cup issues of the 3B, or at least, you eliminate the anxiety from worrying about them.

My 13bt is the engine that could. Direct injection, no glow plugs, no edic, inline pump, and plenty of room in the engine bay. Downside is that parts are scarce here in the states.

Ok then- I'll be asking for the 13bt. May take a year or more to find one but I'm in no hurry. Unless of course Captain wants to let his go..... Ha.

Thanks-

Pete

BS, go with the 3B and turbo it ...

13BT are tough engines but ask anyone honest enough to give the answer and that sensitive throttle issue kills all so called DI benefits.
plus 13BT are not good on fuel.

plus

Dougal likes them so there must be something wrong with them.

What sensitive throttle issue?

That's one subjective opinion, here's another for the 13B-T

9.5 to 10.5 L/100km 22 to 24 USMPG on diesel

11 L/100km 21 USMPG on B20-B30 biodiesel+diesel

Measured over 6 years.

That's 'good on fuel' IMHO for a truck that weighs 4350-5400+ lbs.

That's twice as good as the gasser 4x4 it replaced.

For something better on fuel, consider an AWD Corolla.

nothing subjective about it ... general consenses have shown that the 13BT returns low to mid 20s CMPG. if you are getting 31 mpg C then you are an exception.

unless you are driving an auto then i will call you on not experiencing the sensitive throttle issue.

I found you could work around the sensitive throttle throttle issues on a 12HT by adding some more springs fore and aft and using the fast idle knob,I cant see why this wouldnt work with a 13BT.
But a 3B is going to be a LOT cheaper to procure and maintain.
If you really want a 13BT,go the whole hog and get a 14B or 15B

Anyone remember Milo's 13BT engine rebuild vids?

thats a good point Rosco, if he is going to swap engines and living in Japan he has access to the cooler, newer engines that will almost bolt right up ... why work with something that is 25 years old when he could find a couple year old diesel ...

thinkin outside the box, you Ozzies are pretty good at that, eh?

LOL Im just thinking from my point of view,13BT are all but gone here, loved to death by their BJ74 owners.
However, the bigger 14B and 15B and their Hino cousins are all over the place, usually with high klms ,but cheaper than 1HZs to rebuild.

If I was in Japan ,I would be looking at one of the Coaster 4cyl turbos,I think they are like a 15B FTE Megacruiser engine but with a new designation.

which is one of my biggest hold backs on the pre 1990 Toyota diesels ... parts availability.
if you are going to do a swap then get something you know you will be able to source parts for ...

I could go for the 14 or 15. I've seen the 15bt in a 40 here and its a very tight fit. Doesn't seem to be quite the drop in as the 13bt somehow. Likely out of my price range too. I can pick up a 3b with 5 speed and transfer for about $2500 U.S. with about 150,000km. The 13bt- not sure exactly but just a bit more again with tranny and transfer attached. You have to factor in the fact that the Yen is strong to the dollar. Just 6 years ago this would have been $1600.

What ever I do it has to be in the B family or else I can not pass inspection.

What kind of parts are you referring too? I figure get the engine and go thru it to be sure that it will go a good distance. After it is played out then move on to the next one. So far the 2b has been ok for parts but if I had to do a rebuild the I dunno......

as the years pass parts are becoming scarce, while i was working on the old 3B engines different parts, mostly electrical, became obsolete.
if you are good at making something work then it might be worth your risk but for the average joe having to source an edic motor, an injector line, return line or other parts might be the difference between happy ownership and a regret.
if you are doing the swap yourself then the only thing you will lose is your time but if you are paying someone to do the swap and it sits when a part goes sideways then that can hurt.
you are in a bit better situation then most of us, you are at the heart of the Toyota empire. you could even go to the auction and pick up a truck for what some of us pay just for a part and shipping.

to be honest, it has been so long since i really needed to order parts for the B series that i can't remember what has been and issue and what hasn't.

that being said, in the next couple weeks i will be wrenching on a couple old 3B engines. if i run into any issues i will post up the parts here ... if you like.
