Hi guys. I've been reading here for a while but only just signed up to see if anyone here can answer a few questions for me. I bought a 97 land cruiser with a HKS T04Z turbo a while back. Ive been doing a bunch of repairs and PM on the brakes and body and am just getting to the engine. I've already changed all the rotors and brake lines and rebuilt all the calipers. I've also removed the roof rack and cut out the rust on the roof and welded in new patches. It has the Emanage ultimate piggyback ECU and i have a few codes that the Toyota ECU is showing that I'd like to get rid of. One code is P0110 AIT sensor failure which is expected since the MAF has been removed and a MAP sensor used instead. I would like to install a stand alone IAT but cant find any info on what the values are on the built in one so I can find something that will match. I found a fast reacting IAT for my RX7 by matching up the values with the old slow reacting one and am hoping to do the same here. Can any of you point me in the right direction to find specs on it? I know I'll have to retune the emanage when I get a sensor working but think it will give me a little more low end power. I also have codes for both knock sensors but will track down whats going on with the wiring later in the week when I have time. They might have disconnected them because of getting knock readings when they were running the thing on 22lbs of boost using race gas. I'm running 16lbs now and plan on leaving it at that.
Sorry for the long post but I'll get some pictures up tomorrow so you can at least get a look at my headahce. Its been taken in the complete opposite direction than everyones rig on here its a very fast grocery getter. I already have a hilux surf with 35s and am half way through my V8 conversion on that so don't have any plans right now to offroad the Cruiser.

Can't wait to see what you're working with. I am surprised with the piggyback they were able to get it to run well with out MAF inputs unless they spoofed the MAF table. Have you taken a look at the tuning software?

Lets see a pic of that turbo! On 22psi did they do new head gasket and head studs? Any idea the power they made? Or other engine mods?

When they were running 22psi they got 770ish if I remember right. I don't know if they did any internal work on the engine but suspect they just did the gasket and stud upgrade. There used to be a dyno run on YouTube of it being tuned I'll see if I can find it. From what I've read it's common with that piggyback to remove the MAF and use the 4bar greddy MAP sensor. I'll take some pics today.
Thanks for the replies.

In stand alone systems it is very common to delete the MAF and just run MAP but in a piggyback the stock computer is still looking for a MAF voltage, so they must of some how spoofed that signal.

As for power numbers that is quite impressive if it is on a stock bottom end. If you do talk to the shop just ask them if all they did was head studs and what gasket they used.

I think you're going to kind of be in uncharted territory here on ih8mud, to my knowledge no one has used the Greddy piggyback system. The person you might want to check with regarding the AIT sensor voltage to temp output is "Landtank" I think he should have that data since he designed a new MAF housing and uses a later model MAF sensor.

Just kind of did some searching and it looks like it was done by "welded performance" but I can't find that shop online any longer. In that YouTube video they mention that the 27psi run was also done on pump gas.... That might have been why they took the knock sensors out. That's quite a bit of boost on pump. Most tuners won't go that high on pump 93 octane to avoid predetonation. If you get a chance take some pics of the turbo setup.

Good luck!

I looked for the shop as well with the same results. I'm assuming they had a very conservative tune on it to survive the 27psi on pump. I have no problems with detonation at 16psi and I spend quite a bit of time at full throttle. I need to put an air filter on it since they were running it with just a hot on the turbo. I have pics ill upload them tonight when I get home

Cool sounds good. I am running a much smaller turbo a 7670 at around 14psi and Lilevo is running a GT35 turbo at around 12psi. So at 16psi it will be interesting to see how things work out. Is it intercooled? I am sure they swapped injectors any idea what they went with?

Surprised there isn't more info out there on it. It looks to be a pretty popular video with 220,000 views.

The original owner was here on mud for a while and I got to see the truck when it was in NC a couple years ago. Unfortunately all his pics have been removed and he didnt stick around long seeing as how some folks dont have anything good to say if your 80s not lifted and dirty. I think he was bouncing back and forth between NC and FL (tampa i believe) and the shop was in Florida IIRC. There are a couple good 1/4 mile runs on youtube as well.

I do not recall and intercooler at the time but this may be the one with the ice bath around the air intake.

Very nice, he must have lowered compression quite a lot if he is saying 30psi on pump gas!! Whoa!

Can't see the pics, but it sounds like he threw a rod on the stock bottom end around 18psi with the HKS Turbo.

Well looks like your truck is back home bahamasair, haha. Can't wait to see some pics, and will be interesting if you aren't intercoolers to see some IAT's.

It's intercooled. I know the trans had a problem a couple of months before I bought it and was fixed here. That basically means it will explode any day now because nothing is ever done properly on this island. Thanks for the info on the knock sensors it means it's something that's gone wrong since its been here. I'll fix it. I just got home so will stick some pics on photobucket now.

In on Nassau in the Bahamas. The original guy who brought it over must have got it from JGWINC he sold it to one of his friends a year or so ago and he left the island so I got it cheap. It looks worse in the pics than in real life but it needs cleaning up and some TLC.
Here are some pics

Oh nice! Nice A/A front mount, the grill and sheetmetal must have been modified for it to fit. Sounds like you got a great deal on a well built truck if the motor has been built completely forged and the transmission was overly built.

But yeah definitely get a filter on that thing and I wonder if you could get a MAF housing and use the MAF sensor but only use the pin for the IAT. But really since you are piggyback and MAP it wouldn't do anything but kill the OBD II code.

I did think about that and it is stupid to want to get rid of the engine light it just annoys me whenever I look at it. Ill be going through everything on the truck and cleaning up and replacing parts as I go. Ive had a few turbo cars that were faster than this but it sounds like the end of the world when this thing spools up and starts flying. It sounds like a jet because the exhaust is so quiet.

You are so right about that. I remember that he was catching hell for modding his cruiser without dents and mud. He was the only guy around that time making the cruiser a force to be reckoned with. Jgwinc was good guy.
