Or maybe a flat gray to match the wheels and frame? Then again, that may be too over the top. Then you could really get carried away and add a shovel, ax and pick-ax to the hood like the old school series Rovers. Though theirs were actually on the fenders and not the hood. I'd post a pic but that would be sacrilegious on such an amazing Toyota build thread.

Actually I like this idea better...consider my vote changed. :D

Hello Cody C and 1978HJ45,
Thank you both for a good giggle! Cheers, 61Mk+

Since I can't offer anything of mechanical significance, I can at least offer some humor. That goat would make great "Bar-B-Q" ...very lean
and tender.:)

we needed to strengthen the hood so the owner can walk on it

I wish Gozzard would make FRP 70 series hoods strong enough for walking on.

I did something similar in 2009 so I could walk on the hood to get into the RTT. I configured the tent to flip forward, and entrance was by stepping up into it from the hood.
Cut two 3/4" OSB panels, routered the edges, screwed them into the old bent-up hood I took off Zippo, applied a bit of grip tape, and voila... 2 hours later I have reinforced hood panels. And they looked awesome. Everyone commented on them.

Best Picture I can find is here.

Indeed, after seeing the Gozzard panels for the 40 series, I dream of rebuilding the entire front end of Ziplock in Fiberglass. Got a quote for hood (wish scoop), upper fenders, cowl, valance, and windshield frame for about 2K +Shipping form FRP in AUS. I wish Gozzard would make these parts. Not sure I trust those Australian parts.

Mike will make anything as long as there are a quanity of 10 being ordered.

he already makes fiberglass hoods that you want walk on for the new 79 series...

sidenote: anyone want brand new 79 series box take offs complete?

well Peter, that actually makes me feel much more comfortable with my design, thanks.

I say go aluminum top and have spray on bedliner, colour matched to the body's colour, or flat black to cut down on glare.

Just mask off the scoop and PC it before to match the rest of the body.

Some aluminum channel on the underside and some beefy hood shocks should be good Id figure!

no issues, i really shouldn't have tainted this thread further with that post ...
but
its there now.

Troopy is coming along very nice Wayne.
But please leave that box on the hood for the pizza, there is alot more neat looking hood scoops around.
Unless you need to be able to walk on the scoop aswell?

there might be cooler looking scoops around, agreed.
no matter what design i make it will be a huge scoop due to the size of the intercooler. you don't want to block the view of the driver. you want it strong enough to walk on.
once it is PC black it should blend into the lines of the 70 hood.

in the meantime, what would YOU do in this situation?

Does the intercooler require the "ram air" effect provided by the scoop or would a flush mesh screen ( similar to the heater intake on a Land Rover D-90) serve the purpose?

I guess the scoop depends on it's needs so to walk on it the pizza box will most practical.

I would walk around the scoop and for a large top mount choose something like isuzu dmax hood scoop.

On my 79 I have a scoop of a GU Nissan patrol td but prob not big enough for the top mount in the troopy.

I know this is a bit off topic now but I just looked back at the pages with the stainless exhaust. I'm getting ready to build the exhaust on my 79 project. I'm trying to decide whether or not its worth it to go the stainless route. Thoughts? I would be building it the same way as you mocking it up myself and then tig welding it. It would be routed different on my truck but I would break apart in 3 sections with v bands/flanges. I'm assuming you used 304 stainless and not 409?

304
keep an eye, i just am about to finish up the SS on my PZJ70 and will be doing a thread later.

so, do i feel it is justified? depends on where you live, here in Rustario it is a no brainer. in a "no salt" climate i doubt it would be important.
