Hey there,

My 1970 F40 3 speed transfer case kept popping out, opened it up and and found this :

<embed width="600" height="361" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowFullscreen="true" allowNetworking="all" wmode="transparent" src="http://static.photobucket.com/player.swf" flashvars="file=http%3A%2F%2Fvid215.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fcc284%2Fprerunnerbud%2FIMG_0361.mp4&title=">

Is a rebuild kit going to take care of this or am I missing something? Is something else going on? Thanks for checking it out.

If for some reason those links don't work. The gears situated between the front driveshaft and rear driveshaft are moving around (back and forth) causing the shift collar to pop into neutral.

Hi -

I just finished rebuilding my transfer case...on my '70...funny enough. Yes, I would think a rebuild should fix that. There should not be the slop/play you show in the video. That front, large output gear has a bearing and a smaller end gear over the top of it holding it in position. The end gear has a snap ring that helps hold it in place on the shaft (along with being press fit on) - the ring might have come off allowing for the play. Anyway, assuming no damage from the existing play, a proper rebuild should fix the issues. I'm sure others will weigh in. Good luck!

Thanks for the reply! I have been looking at coolermans webpage and the Rebuild looks easy enough. Did you run into any issues?

I agree with stoshzack, a rebuild will fix that. I just finished mine following along with Coolerman's site and a rebuild kit from Kurt at Cruiseroutfiiters and it was very easy with no issues.

I also agree with @BretwithoneT that Cruiser Outfitters sells a good rebuild kit. I used one on my FJ60 and was very happy wth it.

I used the FSM to rebuild mine. I did not know about Coolerman's rebuild web page. Wish that I did. The only warning I would give is to measure the depth on the rear side bearing on the TC for the input shaft on transmission. When you separate the TC from the transmission, this shaft slides out of the TC. Two input gears slide off (and are removed via the power take off opening). When re-pressing in the depth of the new bearing, the bearing depth is critical so that the two gears have enough clearance to slide back in to the TC. On my first try, my depth was off and there was interference when trying to put both gears back in.

Let me know if you need further explanation.
