Hello all you great cruiserheads, Well here i am today with yetr another dilemma. The good news is im buying a house in two months and the bad news is im buying a house in a few months. With that i mean the boss wont let me spend a lot of money. The problem 1987 fj60 and the transfer case has a nasty whine and vibration. With the rear driveshaft out the vibration is minimal but still there, with the rear in the vibration is readily noticed in the shifter of the transfercase. So is the time to rebuild and if so i guess i need the manuals and do they sell a rebuild kit for these. I drained the fluid and there wasn't any metal chunks. Well if anyone can help me thanks. If anyone has a transfercase they want to let go for cheap also let me know.

thanks
Bryon

If you rule out the easy stuff and are sure its inside the Tcase, you might as well rebuild the case you have. Installing a different case would require taking the current one apart to remove it. Then assembling the new case in place to install it. When you take the old one apart you will likely find that the tapered bearings on the output shaft are shot. If the gears all look good then a rebuild kit should be all you need. I've used an Austrailian kit from Manafre or JTO. It was pretty good except the needle bearings for the idler shaft were the wrong size. If you have it all apart, take the time to replace the tranny/tcase oil seal.
