If you look closely, you can see trace bits of the yellow zinc plating, which I honestly didn't notice until I wiped the cap clean for the picture. I think it just fell to inadequate prep from the factory. You can see where it's rubbed off from my reservoir too.
Yep mines faded too. Both the cap and resoviour. Almost like it’s been rubbed with steel wool one too many times.

Pulled the top off my rear platform to swap out the sending unit today. Also finished getting all the wiring done and capped off the hard fuel send line so I don’t get crap in it.
Messed around with routing vac lines for the brake booster and pcv valve. Hooked up the dizzy advance. Blocked off a few exposed vac nipples. Got the sniper water sensor installed into the block. I had it in the thermostat housing and the wiring just barely made it, but it was so tight I couldn’t leave it. So I finished draining the block of coolant and did what makes sense. Gotta get some more coolant now.

Here are some pics of the sending unit job and my platform.View attachment 2805072View attachment 2805073View attachment 2805076View attachment 2805075View attachment 2805077
Hello,
Question:
What was the problem with the unit? did you have any type of symptoms?
I am having fuel issues and I think is the unit. Because the gauge always shows I have 1/2 a tank of gas, but I think I am running out. I replaced both the pump and filter. Filter looked full (like gas is running thru it) but then after about an hr of running it the cruiser died and the fuel filter was empty. However, the dash shows I have 1/2 a tank.

If the unit is bad, could that be telling the dash gauge I have some gas but in reality be empty? I was riding the cruiser and it died on me yesterday like I had no gas.
Also the gas on the filter looks rusty. (like the old crap that sits in the bottom of the tank). Another reason I think the tank is empty.
I am going to troubleshoot it today.
1- see if the tank is empty by taking the drain plug off and see if gas comes out.
2- if there is gas in the tank, see if the pump is working (it is brand new. I replaced it a few days ago because of the same issue).
3- if there is no gas in the tank, change the unit??

That is kind of where i am at the moment.
Thanks,
J

Also, do you mind sharing where and how much you paid for your unit??
Thanks,

My gauge was jumping around iradically. If you look at the picture I posted of the old unit you can see major corrosion on the electrical leads.

My suggestion would be, since you think there’s rust in the tank, to take the fuel sender out and inspect the tank from the top. You’ll see clearly any rust or debris in the tank. The sending unit is only there to tell the gauge how much fuel is in the tank. It is not a pump. There are two hard lines in the passenger corner of the tank. One for send and one for return. There is a filter over those leads and they sit in a little pan to keep fuel from sloshing around too much at the take up point. It’s tough to see but if you get at the right angle you’ll see what I’m talking about.

If your tank is full of rust you will want to carefully and thoughtfully drain it. Be safe and environmentally sound. Fumes can ignite and ruin your day. Disconnect your battery before you do any of this work.

Eastwood.com sells several products for servicing old gas tanks. I would highly recommend them. You can do this yourself, but you’ll have to drop the whole tank and wash it out etc...

There was a fuel tank recall on the fj60. If you search for fj60 fuel tank recall online you can find a site to punch in your vin number and see if the truck had a new tank installed. If not, you can look on this website and there is some information on getting Toyota Corporate to honor the recall. The tanks are discontinued, but there are a few dozen floating around various dealership warehouses and you can get ahold of them. I don’t know if the fj62 tank will work in an fj60.

There is also the option for an aftermarket long range tank that holds around 40 gallons. But you’ll have to move your spare tire.

For the fuel sending unit I found an OEM one from cityracer.com. I think it was $129 shipped. Not cheap for a sending unit, but it could be a whole lot worse all things considered.

Well Ladies, I got it running! Wow! What a change!! It’s a whole new truck!!

Many thanks to @MoaByte for help talking me through initial start up and dialing in the advance. I think I still have some tweaks to make here and there. And there’s defiantly gonna be some getting used to this throttle. It is very peppy now!

I also need to get used to the new sound of this engine. The headers make a huge difference and this electric fuel pump is kinda loud, but hey, I know it’s working...

I need to burp the coolant here in a little while and top off my power steering pump and then I’m gonna see what it’ll do on the highway. This dizzy recurve seems to work very well with the sniper. I can only imagine what it would be like with a professionally recurved unit... and furthermore, what a fresh engine overhaul would do for it. I’ve got 281,550 miles on the clock and this engine has never pulled so strong since I’ve had it.

I’ll take some pics and some videos and see if I can get them uploaded later today. I gots thangs to drive right now!!

Ok, thanks.
Thanks for the recall info. I will look around.
Thanks for the tip about disconnecting the battery. I did not know.
I have done tank cleaning/servicing on motorcycles so I am familiar with the process.
I was mostly concerned with the gauge showing what I don't have.
But, yes, looking to try to fix the issue this weekend. I will try to remove and see if there is rust in the tank.
The unit i saw online for like $190.00 so, you got a good deal. I will check the site and see if i can get it there.

Thanks,

Got my acDelco charcoal canister installed.

I’m using a one way vacuum valve from an 80’s camaro with a T off the vacuum advance for the dizzy so it purges when I hit the throttle. No more swoosh from the tank!

And I did this for the exhaust for the time being. The 02 sensormay be a little too far back but it seems okay for now. I’ll run this for a little while until I can get some nicer headers. I don’t like how these things fit. They’re very close to the oil pan and dump straight at the bellhousing.

Do you have a link or part number for the one-way valve on the charcoal canister?

The sniper seems to be running pretty great so far. It stalled on me twice while pulling out of a parking space. It may have just been cold and not sure what to do. I’m not sure. I’ve got about 70 miles on it so far and it’s pulling better than ever. This was worth it for sure.

I’m not sure if I like the way the pedal feels. I may need to get a longer cable. I used the 26” lokar cable and it makes the bend alright, but I think it would feel nicer if the cable wasn’t bent quite so tight.

I’ll try taking it up the canyon sometime this week and see how it pulls up higher and steeper. The old carb was struggling hard last time I was up there.

When you get this running where you are happy with it, you should get a breathe adapter from Mosely or Redline so you can use the stock breather.

Well, don’t use a plastic clip in the hand throttle provision and expect it to hold your lokar cable in place. It will let you down.

Driving up to my sister’s house up the canyon today, the truck ran great! Only a bit of hesitation here and there as the sniper figured out what to do under the higher altitude conditions.

About 1/4 mile from her house my lokar cable seized up and made my engine rev hard. Had to kill the engine and pull off into a driveway. I pulled the plastic clip out with a bit of frustration. I had some jb weld putty on hand and tried to use that to hold the cable in place, but I think it got kinked when it slipped out of the plastic clip. No matter what I did I couldn’t get the throttle to return to zero.

So I walked up to my sister’s place and got a ride with her down to town and picked up a Mr gasket stainless cable. I managed to get It installed in the dark as the temperature plummeted. I used jb weld putty to connect the Mr gasket cable to my pedal. After that cured a bit I fired it up and was able to drive down the mountain just in time to drink a beer for my birthday. I’m glad I know what I’m doing… LOL!!!

While I was stopped, working, a couple pulled over on the other side of the road coming down the mountain. They had Nebraska tags. In a 4 runner. I could smell it…. His front brake caliper locked up and was burning. He didn’t even know how to use a jack. I told him to let it sit for a half hour or so and see if they could limp down the road. Seemed to drive alright after that. Not exactly sure what happened and I didn’t see them off in the ditch as I was coming down so I assume he got it to a safe place.

Did I say I’m glad I know what I’m doing??? Thank you all for your tech and expertise! It is invaluable!!

After selling, donating, and scrapping 9/10ths of my personal belongings I crammed the rest of my stuff into the 60 and I’m moving to Florida. It’s bittersweet. I love this place and it’s been home for almost 10 years, but I just can’t take the high cost of living and all the mask/vax stuff going on here. This trip will be interesting to say the least… I’ll post updates along the way.

Best of luck to you. That’s a tough decision. CO is one of the prettiest places on the planet, but I completely understand the logic behind your decision

Made it down to Pueblo in one piece. It was very windy leaving Boulder and I’m having issues with power on steep inclines, but that’s to be expected when you’ve loaded everything you own in the back. Temps haven’t gone above 195. Oil pressure is good. Fuel consumption … not so much. But better than I expected, honestly. I got about 180 miles on 14 gallons. I’m going to try to make it to Amarillo by this evening.

Yep. A great running 60.

Got to Amarillo last night and slept at a truck stop. Nothing exploded or leaked or caught fire. So far so good.

I forgot about Raton pass going from Trinidad CO to Raton NM… I barely made it. I was in second gear doing 30 while people were passing me doing 60+… they were doing construction so there was no way for me to turn around and go back down. I’m genuinely surprised I made it. Seriously. After that it was mostly down hill. Northern New Mexico has its hills but nothing like what Colorado threw my way.

It got dark right as I was getting into Texas. That stretch between Raton and Amarillo is hilly with lots of turns and lots of wind. And the speed limit is like 9,000 mph. 18 wheelers were passing me on country roads! lol!!
