How many miles does your rig have on it? What is the worst things that have gone wrong( water pump, transmission failure etc...) See below for why I ask.

Hello all I am a new member. No cruiser yet but I am trying to make some decisions on what to buy.

I am looking for a FJ62 for an all around utility wagon, Drive the wife and new baby around in town and then be able to get out in the woods for camping and hunting. Carry around the dogs and throw the kayak on top. I had a buddy in high school that had one. Really liked it. I know the power can be lacking but the room was amazing and it was a good off roader.

I have been a member of the 4btswaps.com for a while now and still have not done a swap so I may be slow to actually become a participating member for a bit. I am currently doing a major restructuring of my vehicle fleet and an FJ I hope is in the future. I currently have 3 jeeps and 2 older chevy trucks. I hope to get down to one jeep, a cruiser, and a pretty knarly jacked up chevy.

Any help will be much appreciated. I did look in the tech section for this info but I may have missed the thread.

Cut and pasted from an old post of mine. Think I am around 275 000 km now (~173 000 miles). Hope you have deep pockets for gas.



Asside from modifications, and base-lining things, and normal maintanence, the only fixes I have had to do have been:

re-doing the seals in both axles
re-doing the brake friction material, replacing the rear cylinders and one caliper
an alternator that was on its way out
a battery
exhaust re-done from a combo of blowing it out and ripping it off during a high-centering episode (I think it was the original)

This is over the 2 1/2 years I've had it, and asside from regular oil changes, I don't think the PO did much on it. Because of where I live, the work I have done has involved a fair bit of seized/broken hardware, but that may not be a concern for you. One of the nice things about these trucks is that you can do most of the work yourself with simple tools and an FSM.

Asside from the dead battery, the truck has ALWAYS started and never left me stranded.

I've taken it up mountains, I've River Shivered it, I've jumped in and driven to LA and back (~4500miles), -35 to 110 degrees, clawing up a muddy slope in 4low to 90 mph on the interstate......... They are good trucks.

180K+ on the odometer. HG went due to shoddy PO repairs to the head. Rebuilt/replaced top end. Waterpump and radiator were replaced around 150K.

205,000 miles and going strong. nothing major has gone wrong that I know of (I purchased the truck at 140K). I keep up with regular maintenance and replaced the smog pump & power steering pump and alternator. I have also had to chase after leaks (oil leaks and exhaust leaks).

My 60 has 253,000 miles on it and still running strong. Hell, I think the biggest problem I've had with it was a wasted radiator. If you are going to get a cruiser, I would honestly say get a 60. The auto tranny is known to have many problems while the manual trannys are built to last forever.

Thanks for the replies. I am gooing with the 62 auto because I haven't gotten my wife to learn how to drive a stick yet. For a while it will be hers.

My mind changes (at least about what I want to do related to cars) as much as a woman. Ha Ha. Right know I am thinking if I could find 2 Cruisers then i could do a 4bt swap in mine and set aside the motor and tranny as a backup for my wife's. I can justify about anything given the chance. My wife did not think this was a great an idea as I did.

The truck I am building will have a 4bt too, so I would have a back up for the cruisers (daily drivers).

237,xxx miles original trans and engine and neither have ever been apart. I lost #3 cylinder a week and a half ago so i will be doin a stroker and fuel injection swap (also known as a 2FE) verry soon.

92 FJ 80, 235K miles. Maintanence issues only. And 1 fuel pump relay.

Mines got 229K and alot of it was on county roads.

All I've HAD to do was a knuckle rebuild and new suspension and a new exhaust.

My 62 has 210k. Since you have a new baby, I want to tell you that my 1988 62 does not have rear shoulder seatbelts.

Way back in 1996, I bought a 1985 FJ60 with 172K on the clock at the time. First up was a desmog with a Weber and a header. What a difference that made! It ran like a champ after that. The water pump got tired at around 180K. The power steering pump was also tired and I ended up replacing that not too long after the water pump. At 235K I got some wild hair and decided that I would rebuild it in an effort to get more power out of it. At that point, it didn't burn any oil or even leak. I should have left it alone; it had good compression and upon tearing it down the bearings and all internals were in terrific shape. I know that motor could have gone 350K without any trouble. Now it has 350K on the odo but you can see from my signature what changes have been made. Overall it's the best built, most reliable and versatile thing I have ever owned and I have no plans of parting with it.

My 1988 FJ62 has shoulder seat belts for the two side seats but not the middle. I thought all FJ62's had shoulders in rear?

I have 280,000 mi on my cruiser. It has had exhaust leaks, new radiator, new fuel pump, rebuilt starter and much more. Overall it is an easy car to fix as said above. The one downside of this truck is the consistent 9 to 12 miles per gallon I get. Other than the gas mileage I have no complaints. I too am considering a diesel swap a few years in the future. Good luck and keep asking more questions.

Just double checked. No rear shoulder belts.
I guess Toyota was still in production transition from the 60's series because mine was manufactured in 1987. I thought most 62's had rear shoulder seat belts.

IIRC, the 62s got rear shoulder belts partway through the 88 production year. My 89 has them.

i'd say a 60 myself. but it's really a six of one, half dozen of the other thing.

Check the sig....The 92 and one of the 87's are just getting broken in...The other 87 still runs OK but is in need of a desmog (emissions stuff), and you have to double clutch second every now and then but still going strong...

194,000 (or so) and running strong. No major issues, just standard maintenance. The output shaft on my A440 auto tranny is beginning to make the tell-tale "CLUNK," but I expect it to go another few thousand miles before anything serious transpires.

At some point I, too, plan to do the diesel swap.

260K on the odometer when I got it in need of a valve job. Who knows how many real miles though cause the PO drove it on a broken spedo cable. Needed valve job, spedo cable, some emission gremlins sorted out (passed smog a month ago!), and it needs a knuckle rebuild.
