Are all municipalities this dense?

Nope. Some of us have nice smooth, flat roads with no obstructions other than name changes every 1.5 miles (often taking the name of an intersecting street).

why on earth are manhole covers placed in travel lanes directly in the path of wheels? They are never level with the travel surface and are often worse than potholes. Are all municipalities this dense?

because the road has been widened at least once from when it was first built. the manholes used to be directly over the stormwater drain pipes along the right of way. As roads are widened, it was deemed easier to put a manhole cover in rather than dig up and place new drainpipes....

My 4 lane road on my commute home has been in the repaving process for the last month or so. every single water shutoff, manhole, etc was just laying in wait for people who are too dense to avoid them, and peg them doin 15 over the speed limit...or they swerve like an f1 driver.

Im the F1j45 guy.... swervin and swearin but amazing how a leaf sprung vehicle trains you to their location even in traffic :D

on Pisgah Church, I'm usually a left lane person...but thats where 90% of the sharp steel has been...so I would just mosey over to the right lane and let the carnage happen around me. I left enough of a gap in front and behind so noone tagged me.

Yea...the roads have been widened, but if the manhole cover is in the middle lane of a 3 lane ( in each direction) then the cover was in the travel lane when first constructed it would seem. And when there are 3 or 4 in a row, somebody just didn't give a damn. don't see why they would put them in roadways regardless, just go 20 feet in either direction and place the cover there. The access is still there. This, combined with other shortsighted moves in road construction and naming, I believe that quite a few things just aren't thought out very well.

The right of way easement may not have allowed direct widening. the road may have been widened more on the north side, than the south side, and then meandered back southerly when the right of way would accommodate it.

Or, when a freshly paved road suddenly needs to have places dug out then half-a$$ed patches put in. Never fails, those places always come up within a month to three of the completion.

City of Raleigh rant. Crabtree creek floods all the time. My question to you, is there not some kind of boat that could drive up crabtree creek and basically pulverize all the logs/debris that are clogging it up? It may not solve all the issues but there are huge logs and dams from debris all up and down crabtree creek. I thought I saw a picture of military boat that could do this.

The area around Crabtree Creek has been a known flood issue for many, many, many years. They've tried flood control lakes, diversions, channels. All to no avail. The big problem now with Crabtree Creek is all the asphalt and concrete and storm drains that dump water into it. It's got to go somewhere and just a little will raise the water levels in a hurry.

I know it may sound trite.

AP kids prepare all year for a 3 hour test.

When kids arrive on the testing site you expect test administrators to know their s**t (or know nothing at all but at least be able to read a manual!!)

She advises students they must write in pen, no pencils allowed.

WFT?

These kids have been coached all year to use a pencil. By me.

Who has ever heard of taking a physics test in PEN?

She claims the "official" instructions were to use a pen.

The hell they were. UHG!

Well, arent AP Physics students prepared with pocket protectors full of pens, pencils, protractor, calculator and michael douglas "Falling Down" glasses?

Hope your kids do ya proud, Rice. I know this time of year is very tense for AP teachers and students.

@Rice 'S kids can use pen because they don't make mistakes.

Ha. Thanks.

I'm calm(er) now.

I received an apology from the test admin's boss .... but not from her.

Rant off.

@Rice, Glad you received an apology. Did the Test Admin Boss do anything for the kids who had to work those problems with a pen instead of pencil?

For no larger than Hickory is, it's ridiculous. Bunch of numbers then SE, NE, SW, but I don't recall a NW. Laid out like a spiderweb rather than grid. Plenty of one-ways. It's no Salt Lake City.

Yeah, Hickory might be the worst. 123 North SE 17th St West, for example.

I remember reading an article on how they arrived at their 'naming convention' - not that it made sense.... I've gotten lost in both Hickory and Conover multiple times.... grid system, nope. consecutive numbers following the lay of the roads, nope. :) My example:

205 5th Street Pl NE

There really are no compensations that can take place once they've taken the test. It would be "possible" to declare a mis-administration of the test which would be a bit like having a lit match in the room and pulling the fire alarm ... every student would have to resit for the entire makeup exam.

Each year something seems to go kerphloey and that just happened to be the glitch for this year. Last year it was a G** D*** parent volunteer serving as a proctor, loaded down with jingly jewelry, who wouldn't shut up and was flirting with another proctor while kids were testing. :bang:

Not a rant but the writings of a proud dad and grandfather.

This photo is of my Daughter Erin and her son Walker also known as "T". Walker is my oldest grandchild and only grandson and he has a talent for baseball. As a freshman in Seneca, SC he is, I believe, the only starting freshman on both the Varsity football and baseball teams in SC. The baseball team won their district championship and start the series for the upper state championship tonight. Needless to say, I am very proud of both.
