in a few days I should be receiving a new exterior door for my home. a few years ago I laid down a wood flooring and the result was that nothing can be placed directly in front of the door now. like an entrance rug to keep down the dirt, stones dragged into the house. the door is about due for replacement anyway. my problem is that, outside there's a concrete pad and once i adjust to allow the right clearance for the inside, the new door's sill plate will create a tripping hazard.( when entering the home ) this landing is aprox 36 X 42 . I think that I will need to add about an inch of some sort of cement to this stoop. what is a good product to do this with? as it stands now the current pad is slopped from the door sill, down and away from the door I'm not sure how much I can get away adding to the leading edge, since there's two steps up to entrance height . so changing step heights could also change that tripping hazard from sill to steps-equally as bad to my way of thinking. any ideas?

Thoro products are the best for adding a veneer to any concrete surface. They should have a acid etcher product and a glue product. Both of these will help adhere a thin layer. But as with any thin layer it will not last forever but doing a good prep of the stoop will help.

Trying to find a specialty concrete store these days is difficult with lowes, home depot all over tue place but if you can find one they will be able to steer you in the right direction of products and prep.

The Thoro products are very good. I have done step corners, stucco etc with them and they hold up very well.

One thing to consider is what the situation is around the step that you'll be capping. If it is wood trim on the sides, you could end up with a situation where raising the step causes water on the step to "leak" into the trim and create a rot situation.

It is not unusual, at least around here, to have an inch or so of sill to step over from the outside.

That said, have you looked at using a ceramic or terra-cotta tile. It would give you a whole new look and may stand up better over time than a 1" concrete veneer. Don't know where you live, but freeze/thaw cycles are really hard on concrete and parging around here.

I would look into facing all the steps to keep the steps consistent. Maybe veneer stone. Or nonslip tiles.

They make some nice nonslip outdoor tile products. You could adjust the amount of thinset to whatever depth you required. Face the steps and tile them to keep the look and tread height consistent.

well, the new door is set , and the sill plate doesn't appear to be as much of an issue, as i envisioned it would be. i'm going to continue on with this years house exterior up dates, and will reassess this again mid fall. the capping with tiles seems to be to easiest AND will yield the best looking finish, so thinking along those lines...thank you all for the help
