Found one of the small Toyota tool boxes! Does anyone know what these came out of? I haven't been able to locate any literature with these in it. They do fit in the compartment under the seats of the 1959 and earlier FJ25s.

Toyota Wrench Clips

Land Cruiser tool kits all contained wrench sets. The wrenches in each set were held by a metal or plastic wrench clip.

Although not a critical component of a kit, wrench clips are often that last, missing piece necessary to complete a vintage tool kit.

Land Cruiser tool kits through 1983 were supplied with one of these four wrench clips.

Zipper Bag Tool Kits

Zipper bag tool kits included 2 wrenches held by either a yellow or red plastic wrench clip.

The Nickel Chrome Vanadium wrenches provided in the early (1972-79) kits used the yellow clip.

Using the Plastic Wrench Clips

To remove the wrenches from the clip, rotate both wrenches 90° so the raised wrench handles are parallel to the base of the wrench clip. Remove the wrenches individually from the clip. To secure the wrenches in the clip, reverse the process.

Other Toyota Tool Kits

Kits for other Toyota vehicles typically included 3 wrenches. A variety of metal and plastic clips were used.

Wrench Clip Terminology

These clips go by a variety of names: wrench clip, wrench holder, spanner holder. Japanese advertisements for wrench clips may include the term “supanahoruda” i.e., spanner holder.

Other than a lower hinge location and missing spring base, this early Wrench Clip looks quite similar to the KTC design.

Large Tool Roll - OEM (vintage tools) - Made In Japan

This version of the later-style large tool roll probably dates between late 1963-65, based on the tools included in the kit. One identifying characteristic of this kit is that the adjustable wrench and screwdrivers are marked MADE IN JAPAN. In earlier kits, these tools are not marked with the country of origin, and in later kits they are marked JAPAN. Another characteristic of this kit is the large OH logo on the hammer head. Earlier tool kits used Maruki hammers, and later kits have OH hammers with a noticeably smaller logo.

The OH hammer with the large logo and JAPAN. The head is marked 450G and 1 on the back. The pliers are marked TEQ with the M.PAT mark, and have the U-shaped jaw reinforcement. The handles are curved (not re-curved) and marked MADE IN JAPAN on the inner handle, and have dimpled grips.
full

Comparing the large OH logo (bottom) to the smaller logo found on hammers in later kits.

The hub nut box wrench is marked TOYOTA MOTOR and MADE IN JAPAN, and has the short head. The adjustable wrench is marked TOYOTA TEQ MOTOR and MADE IN JAPAN and includes the oval pad on the handle. A later version of this wrench is also marked TOYOTA TEQ MOTOR and MADE IN JAPAN but without the oval pad.

The spark plug wrench is marked TOYOTA MOTOR 20.6 and MADE IN JAPAN and has the formed end. The spanner set includes 6 open-end wrenches held in the blue TEQ wrench clip.

The screwdrivers are marked TOYOTA MOTOR MADE IN JAPAN on the shanks.

The grease pump is marked TOYOTA TEQ MOTOR and MADE IN JAPAN, and comes with a straight nozzle and bent nozzle with chuck.

The Engine Adjust Kit pouch has the TEQ logo and MADE IN JAPAN like earlier kits, but the contents are slightly different. While earlier kits include a 4-leaf feeler gauge marked in metric only, this kit has the 5-leaf gauge marked in decimal and (metric) also included in later kits. This kit also includes the spark plug gap tool and voltage tester, found in both earlier and later kits. It also includes the red handle points file from earlier kits, which is not included in later kits. The ignition wrench is 7x8mm 09855-00021. Earlier kits include 8x9mm 09855-00020 and later kits include 7x8mm 09855-10010.

23mm Hub Nut Box Wrench - New Tool

Available from Toyota as part number 09150-25010 for around $20 from amayama.com, plus shipping. This 23mm wrench fits early Land Cruiser wheel nuts through August 1963. The wrench is 266mm long. The handle is 400mm long and 15mm diameter. Neither the wrench nor handle have Toyota marking.

While the handle is too long to fit the large tool roll, the 23mm wrench can be used with the handle from the 2-piece, 21mm wrench.

Toyota Wrench Clips - part 2

Here's something a little different.
P1010710.JPG

While it looks like the typical TEQ wrench clip and has the same markings...
P1010714.JPG

..it is slightly smaller, enough that it will not hold 6 wrenches, even 6 of the recessed handle type.
P1010715.JPG

Perhaps from an early metal box tool kit, which included a 5-wrench set.

That darn wrench clip was the single hardest thing to find. For obvious reasons, I am sure there are far fewer plastic ones than metal ones around today.

Thanks for all of the great info!!

FJ40 Radios (AM)

Attempting to sort out information about dealer and factory FJ40 AM radios. While there are many Toyota radios, only a relatively few models were offered as optional equipment on FJ40s, and none came standard. Read further for details on US spec FJ40 radios. Please post comments, corrections and suggestions for improvement.

FJ40 Radio Characteristics
  • FJ40 radios are single speaker, AM band radios only
  • All radios have a faceplate that is separate from the radio
  • Dealer option (dealer installed) radios:
    • TEN Auto Radio or FUJITSU TEN brand radios
    • available starting in 1967; part numbers for these radios begin with 08600-
  • Factory option (port installed) radios:
    • National brand radios
    • offered beginning with the 1973 model year; part numbers begin with 86120-
Dealer Radios

The first dealer option radios offered in 1967 were TEN Auto Radio brand manufactured by Kobe Industries. Kobe Industries was one of the three (along with Sony and Hitachi) early commercial producers of transistors in Japan, and in 1959 developed Japan's first all-transistor car radio. Kobe Industries merged with Fujitsu Limited in 1968. In 1972, they spun off FUJITSU TEN as a separate company, focused on automotive and radio electronics. These radios have the TEN logo on the faceplate.

TEN.png

The tuning dial on TEN Auto Radio radios (08600-00010 and 08600-00011) has the two CONELRAD radio frequency (640AM and 1240AM) triangle-in-circle (Civil Defense) marks. CONELRAD (Control of Electromagnetic Radiation) was the first emergency broadcasting system in the US. All radios sold in the US. between 1953-63 were required to have these marks. Some Toyota radios retained the marks through 1969.

CONELRAD.jpg

Up until 1973 dealer radios were typically installed below the dash, underneath or on either side of the steering column. The speaker was usually installed on the firewall or attached to the glove box. Beginning with model year 1973, dealer radios were installed in the dash cutout.

Factory Radios

Beginning in 1973, FJ40 models could be optionally equipped with National brand radios, manufactured by Matsushita Electric, now known as Panasonic. These radios have the block N logo inscribed with “National” in Japanese characters.

Matsushita - black.gif

For US spec FJ40s, factory radios were a port installed option, with the radio, speaker, and antenna installation taking place at Toyota port facilities in the US rather than at the factory in Japan.

Dash Cutout

Radios were installed in the dash cutout. The cutout includes brackets on both sides and on the bottom that allow the radio to be secured. (JDCruiser)

Delete Plate

For vehicles without radios, the radio delete plate covered the dash cutout. The early radio delete plate appears on pages 3 and 5 of the early 1975 Land Cruiser brochure, and on page 5 of the later 1975 brochure.

The parts catalog identifies two versions:
  • 7209-8209 Cover, Radio Tuner Opening 55461-90351
  • 8210-8309 Cover, Radio Tuner Opening 55522-90800
Original and/or reproductions of the “T” delete plate are readily available. The 1983 version appears to be extremely rare.

The raised surfaces were highlighted on early (1973-76) delete plates. (ElHefe)

Other Toyota Radios

While other Toyota radios may fit the FJ40 radio cut-out, most will not fit the FJ40 radio faceplate. For example, the 7505-8210 FJ40 radios, the shafts are on 125mm centers, the radio measures 160mm x 48mm.

Some mini-truck and Corolla radios will fit the dash opening and and have properly spaced shafts to fit the faceplate. However, it is still possible that the tuning window on the faceplate will not align with the numbers on the tuner. With the faceplate on, the tuning numbers should be centered vertically and aligned as pictured in the examples. Numbers that are partially obscured or off-center indicates the faceplate and radio are mismatched.

While many Toyota radios are advertised as FJ40 radios, most do not include the faceplate. Unless the radio is one of the part number listed above, the fit may be problematic.

FJ40 radio faceplates by themselves are probably more difficult find than FJ40 radios with faceplates.
