To rebuild tranny or not?

I am currently in the process of rebuilding my motor. The motor should be out today along with the tranny and tcase. I cannot decide if I should rebuild the tranny or not, the truck has 275k and next summer I am planning on doing the transcontinental trail so I am leaning towards rebuilding it but the cost is what is holding me back. It usually shifts good it only shifts hard when getting on an interstate or when it kicks down.

Personnaly i would not. I would exchamge fluid ans keep on trucking. They are historically robust and many tails of rebuilds havent been too rosey. Another option would be to source a working lower mile unit.

I agree but if I do rebuild it I will have a shop do it. I can handle rebuilding a motor but I dont like to mess with transmissions. But I have been quoted anywhere from $600-1000.

tranny's sell cheap if you find a normal joe trying to sell them. I sold my motor and transmission for $350 and 180k on clock. Another guy I know either sold his transmission for $75 or just gave it away, can't remember what he did.

I wouldn't touch it, and if you have problem, drop it and replace it if you have to.

My A343F is at somewhere around 360k+ and is still fine (although it hasn't been used for towing) so you're probably good.

If you think you want to try it eventually:

Depending on whether you have the A442F or A343F (I believe 1995 is the transition year) you may want to read this thread in regards to rebuilding it yourself (might want to get a burned up tranny for cheap to rebuild, then swap em so you have a known working spare).
