@B3A5T what would a 2 way valve do and how would it benefit?

B3A5T - thank you for the reply and help. I finally got my AIRTEC/TJM Snorkel yesterday and the store whom is a nationally known off-road store is going to install it @ $100 hour, but I figured this was not something to have done wrong. Even the slightest screw up will/could allow water in when I am trying to ford water. I read MANY articles from Australia & USA about the owner made drain hole and as for ME I am going to leave it stock BUT from my Brother's engineering background he thinks it makes perfect sense. I am just am hoping that many degrees from TJM vs one degree from my brother = that they know better, are better informed and have tested in many more times. "I PRAY I AM RIGHT"
I also read/learned that many owners said it is a must to use a substance like this:
"Permatex 80022 Sensor-Safe Blue RTV Silicone Gasket Maker, 3 oz. Tube"
when you are joining pieces. So i will be sure that the installers open the new tube bottle and USE it. Anyone's thoughts on using this compound are MUCH appreciated. I also am having the ARB Differential Breather Kit installed for only the front and rear axel. I know that leaves the transmission & transfer case. But since they are a little higher I will wait for the future if I decide to add two more lines. CJ

Hi,
@TheForger
The two way valve is not for the snorkle -I'm leaving mine as is. The US version of the 100 came with a -not or un- sealed airbox. There is a drain hole on the bottom of it that if left untouched will allow water in defeating the snorkle alltogether. The other option is to dab RTV in the hole and seal it permanently. This idea came from an inmate who has had the Airtec for longer than a year plus tested it without any issues. He states that he has done water crossing without issue and checked the airbox after heavy rain just to find a tiny amount of water at the bottom (not enough to cause concern or even monitor).

@cj007sd
Thanks for the info on using permatex I'll for sure buy some for the instal. And for sure I'm not drilling a hole on the snorkle. I know there is some questioning about rain water getting trapped in there but so far it's just a theory. Haven't read any postings of someone claiming that they had water sit there or worse rain water getting in the airbox.
But to be safe I'll carry a pair of military wool socks which I'll use as prefilters in case of heavy dust or rain.

I would imagine thus major chain has experience in installing snorkels so I don't see them taking more than 2hrs which is fair. And like you said its on their dime if the instal is not done properly.

I agree with you @TheForger - I will also seal the drain hole but with a plug in the bottom of FACTORY AIRBOX and make it so it is removable just in case a lot if water does come in via the snorkel (I know that it is hard to imagine but just in case). That way I will try to make an airtight removable plug to fit the bottom of the factoru air box. If anyone has an idea of a good material or item to use as a plug, please let me know.
But NO holes in the snorkel for me - the jury is still out on that one for me.

See you all out on the trails or in Baja CA

So here's my idea, I want to adapt a Boston Valve in the airbox hole. The type we use in Zodiac boats. So whatever is trapped in the airbox can get out but water won't come in. I specially like it bc it offers a two step system. The little rubber flap and then the screw top cap. No water is getting in the box with the cap on, and if I ever find water trapped in the bottom of the airbox I can unscew the cap and lift the rubber flap and presto! Water drains.
Of course this is all theory and I don't want to experiment to see if it fails. Nevertheless I like the idea better than permanently sealing that hole.

When I installed the Airtec myself, I used sensor safe silicon on all connections.
The good thing about doing it yourself is that you know that is has been done properly.
I know to many stories that a reputable international off road shop didn't do it properly.

That sounds Perfect. I will go over to Coronado tomrrow and see if I can "borrow" some one of our valves. Great idea! Semper Fi HooYah

Stay clear of the CRRCs lol skipper doesn't take it lightly when the gear gets compromised lol !

LOL - I will blame it on a Boot J/K
how about this , so I can stay honest, and keep my security clearance.

WHat do you think of this Gentlemen. Please check website link on how to install the part I think we could all benefit from. I think this might be the answer to all our problems, in regard to the bottom of the USA version non closed AIRBOX. This piece is USA-Military grade, Watertight, durable, removable, idiot proof. Right Size???
Please let me know what you guys think!!

That's exactly what I was thinking, but I have to report that the intake was installed today and after looking at the little hole on the bottom the tech suggested that a smear of the silicon used to instal (Permatex) was the way to go. So we did a low tech solution for what seems like a non issue.
We did replace the air filter and checked that the seal was up to speed.

@cj007sd
It as a good call using the silicon bc the tech informed me that even though the system came w some sort of seals he was sure it wouldn't do. Two tubes of silicon and it should be sealed.

My only concern is if water gets in through the opening of the snorkel via either rain, car wash, etc that it will have no place to drain. But if I can add/remove the hole in the airbox than I can leave it in either for the stock open for normal day to day driving and when I go off-road or come upon deep water than I would make sure I add a plug or use the Permatex. By the way what did you use to replace the filter - I am NOT a fan of the ones you have to oil. I think the stock toyota or I was thinking of buying a reusable one than is DRY (no oil needed) There are different ones rated on Amazon. Any Thoughts? Semper Fi HooYah CJ

I agree on the concern of not having a drain hole and water running down the snorkel. The catch is that car wash or rain water will not make it that far, they will tho "pool" at the base side of the exposed part of the snorkel. The tech suggested going to HomeDepot or the like and buying a heavy duty plug. Measure and YES drill the damn snorkel at the base right where it turns into the fender (where it would pool). Not a fan of the idea but after looking at how it was assembled I see why that's the spot and not on the base of the airbox. Not sure I'll do it anytime soon. I'll wait for a storm and after a drive I'll check the airbox, if water is pooled ill drill the snorkel otherwise I'll leave it intact. I know ENGINE er has had one for over a year, thru storms etc and zero issues of water collecting. So I hope I'm as lucky!
As far as filters, I went oem bc that's what they had. Mine was filthy, they even vacuumed the box. Maybe down the road I'll research others but from my experience in dusty or sandy places it's better to stay away from oiled filters. It's best to have a dry one you can take off in the field and shake sand loose.
HooYah!

The PERMATX went on well? Did you have any trouble with it and/or any suggestions when I apply it. Hopefully Snorkel will be ready to be installed this upcoming week. So since the PERMATX was recommend by so many people I wanted to know how it went and if you used anything special to apply it and I assume you just put it on the inside tube before you slide the larger piece over the smaller and connect them. Did you use some on the outside just in case? Easy to apply or a little difficult. My guys said east but for me it might be hard. LOL
GREAT PICTURE - I know it has been asked a million times but what should I do with my antenna since I listen/use my FM radio a lot. I also want to think of a creative way to use our dash mounted up/down antenna buttons for something else. Releasing mini tire spikes for poor drivers behind me, or something else. I just don't want that button to go to waste!!

The Permatex is very easy. Like toothpaste really. IMHO no need to apply outside, the snorkel has an integrated molded system to "seal" as is. The Permatex (thanks for making me aware of it btw) fills in any possible space.
Be adviced that you may need two people to do this bc -in my case ymmv- it was hard to get the fender aligned bc the mid tube pushes out a bit. Easy fix if someone pushes on the fender inwards as the other person screws "in" the bolt just above the door hinge.

As for the antenna, ditto. I'm old school AND paranoid and won't depend on sat radio or internet music jic there is some sort of PSA announcement ;)

So the antenna is gone, I ordered from Gamiviti Dot Com a mount that bolts just aft the snorkel (no drilling). It bolts using one of the bolts that holds the fender. Then I ordered from Amazon the Dual MAR16B Marine Flexible antenna. This antenna gets goods reviews, it's a short mast, flexible, pivots and it's marine grade. I'll post once installed. I get it Wednesday and I'll instal Thursday. The look won't be for everyone, it reminds me of the presidential limo of the 80s with the tiny masts up front with tiny colors.
Maybe I should get two lol!

Heres a pic of it:

I just looked at me rear rt (passenger side) window and my LC came with the integrated glass antenna. I may give that a shot first. I if it works Ill post and let you know tht way you dont spend $50 or so on the bracket and mast. Check yours to see if yours hace it, its a thin wire and its a amplified antenna. My understanding is that it is prewired and you just need to unplug the powered unit and plug the amplified one.

About the antenna button...
The antenna relay sits behind the glove box door bolted to the evaporator (where the cabin filters are). Due to the low current need of LEDs I would imagine you could use that source to power some strobe lights hidden behind the grill and another set facing back inside the rear hatch glass. As long as they are clear not blue and red etc you are legal, right?
Great for when you travel north into LA traffic.
:cheers:

Someone, sorry I forgot who did it (and too short on time to search :rolleyes:)...but very clever just the same...moved the OEM powered antenna, after his snorkel install, to the DS fender.

I went to the website you said Gamiviti Dot Com. For about $30 you get a perfect bracket then to attach the antenna you said to get from AMAZON. Please tell me your results. I have for the most part heard negative reports from people that connect the wire to the rear passenger side window. I am assuming like any antenna the HIGHER you mount it the better. Before I read your email I already bought from Amazon
Metra 44-UA200 Universal On Glass Amplified AM/FM Antenna, that you mount right above and behind your review mirror. Even though Amazon doesn't give it the greatest rating other people in the car music industry I trust said IF properly installed, that I should be happy. But if my idea sucks and you have good luck with yours I will go with yours. I did have SIRUS radio a long time ago and I loved it. at the time it was $14/month and the best $14/ month I have ever spent. So I might go back to that, but would still like to have a basic FM stereo. Who would think it would be so hard.

For the antenna that I researched a long time for - METRA 44-UA200 Universal On Glass Amplified AM/FM Antenna. If you look at the reviews at Cruthfield or other stereo type stores they give in very high ratings. With my job I can switch in the blue or red flashers (but must be for a good reason, trying to get through traffic doesn't count and prefer to stay the "grey guy" and put the White strobes in the grill and then maybe also the front headlights. The front USA-spec headlights with the turn signals on the side have an opening that is used in the European Land Cruiser for a side Marker but if you open ours there is a small hole that I could stick a strobe through. Any good companies that you know of that make good small LED Flashers. There are so many companies out there. I can find out what HomeLand Security uses. But that doesn't mean they are the best for our use, it just means they got the contract LOL
Would I push the switch up to activate the strobes??? I think I might want to use it for something else BUT have no idea!!

@cj007sd

Im waiting on the delivery of the bracket. The antenna came in and looking good, but I can already tell that the cable provided is too short. Easy fix.
Here's me Turtle (FJ80)
IMG_2310_zpsa5059e93.jpg

bc I ran it in the woods I decided to go with a underdash antenna. Its HORRIBLE. Perhaps the one you decided on works better bc its not inside the dash.

About the lights and antenna switch cool cool Clearly you dont need the strobes.
Kinda weird your last quote. I dont know what to make of it? Im DOD Green Badger now, never injured but I feel that any PHs would take it funny.

Anyway rock on.
Ill post once my antenna bracket comes in!
Cheers
