Hi Folks
I just joined the forum and have a 1992 HZJ77.
I want to get some new tires (and if I need to new wheels to match the tires).
This is a noobie question. Yes, I have been searching and reading trying to learn about tires. Lots of great info here on the forum.
So far it seems the general recommendation is to go with 16" wheels rather than 15".
But as far as tire sizes go, I'm a puzzled about the choices. Seems like folks like: 275/75R/16 or 286/75R/16 or 255/85R/16 or ???
Would really appreciate your ideas on this, and the pros and cons of the choices.
The truck is an automatic, and I'll be mostly driving highway and gravel. Be nice to have something that is good in some snow (I know this may be more the actual choice of make/tread rather than size).
Thanks

Apparently I can't post pics till I get more posts.
I bought it from a guy in Sidney, BC who imported it.

255s - OK, why are they the way to go? Do I need the lifts before I can run the 255s?
Thanks,

Thanks,

255's are ballpark 30", and 285's are ballpark 32". 255's will give you full range in steering, and the standard 235/75's are 29's so you won't be far out on the speedo.

Thank you.

From the sizes, you must be talking 255/75R/16 rather than 255/85R/16 ?

Been doing some more checking on this.
215/85R/16 are 8.5" wide and 30.4"
255/75R/16 are 10" wide and 31"
275/75R/16 are 11" wide and 32.2"
285/75R/16 are 11" wide and 32.8"
285/85R/16 are 10" wide and 33"

The OEMs were 10.5" wide and 31"

Ok If your wanting to lift your cruiser I would say go for the 255/85/16s. These would be Tall skinny tires. about 33.5 and between 10 and 10.6 inches wide. They will track nicely and give you better handling and fuel economy. Is your 77 an auto or a manual? the taller tires will drop your revs for highway which is nice.

If no lift I would say 235/85/16s if you like the tall skinny look. these are around 32 inches tall and 9 inches wide. Same attributes above.

If your after the stock look 265/75/16s or 31x 10.5.

No plans to lift it soon.
It's an automatic
I'm after good handling and fuel economy - so sounds like the 235/85/16 would be a good bet. A little narrower and taller than the 255/75/16
Thanks

I use them as my winters and I love that size.
255s would be my ideal summers.
235/85s are an easy tire to find too, lots of choices.
Depends what your doing with your truck in the end.

I like the idea of the 255 85 16's if they were more common.

if it were me - id do what ever i had to do to get 285 75 16's under that truck

goodyear duratracs are nice but rock throwing SOB's - they catch and throw the little rocks and the big rocks

So, what do you like about the 285 75 16s?
Wider for mud?
Larger diameter for fuel econ?
Or?

255s you only have a few choices.
Toyo M55s, Toyo mts and BFG Mts. There not a common tire size. You will get better fuel economy with these though comparing to 285s If your doing a bunch of pavement and logging roads m55s are hands down going to be the tougher tire to get. Anything toyo will cost you more though.

285s you have your choice at basically any tire. There 33 even in most cases and about 11.5 inches wide (maybe a little less)

For a 70 series I am pro 255..... How often do you honestly screw a tire up.

Duratracs with sipes have been proven to be a good all season tire choice still suitable for off roading and for winter duty.

i'm using the crappy tire duratracs and I love them studded. Proved really good with the 81 as winter driver along the skeena river (highway 16). Thats a nasty stretch of road at times....

Another good choice in 255/85R16 is the Cooper ST. I don't have personal experience, but a couple friends have run them with good results. Long wearing and decent in snow.

Keep posting so you can post pics of your rig!

I have an OME suspension w/ 285 75 R16s on my 1992 HZJ77. I have no complaints although when I swapped on the 35x12.5x15 SSRs the rig looked pretty stellar. :D
