So, what do you like about the 285 75 16s?
Wider for mud?
Larger diameter for fuel econ?
Or?

285 75 and 255 85 are both 33s

The thing I like about the 285 75 s is that they are a very common, easy to find the tire you want, and - from what ive seen - cheaper than 255 85

Id think a stock sprung 77 (or any 7X) would easily be able to fit the 285's.
And the acceleration braking & mpg loss wouldn't be too bad... certainly hard to tell by seat of pants
to me 235 85's just look wrong. too small. but then i have been told im trying to compensate for something

In my case (yes - this is on an 80 and not a 7X,) I had 285 brt tako's on my 96 80 series but needed new boots. I looked at getting 255's. But the tire I wanted (duratracs) didn't come in that size. So Im looking at the 285's duratracs and on a whim ask the guy how much the 315's were And the 315's at my store were only $5 more per tire.

I test fitted Wayne's 35's to my truck. backspacing was different his rims vs mine - it was close, so I went with the 315's and havent regretted it. Some minor rubbing on the plastic flares but nothin too bad, a couple inches of lift or plastic flareectomy and all is good.

Side note. Wayne has a Troopie build ongoing... Right now it has just a 1.5 inch body lift (additional lift coming) and is sittin on 35's and it just looks RIGHT. my understanding is that the owner is leaning towards getting the 315 duratracs.

I said before the duratracs are a rock grabbing tire - they have big and little void spaces in the tread pattern and seem to catch and fling big and little rocks a hell of a lot more than my old (bald) tako's (or as John says a tire with a more closed tread pattern).... but so far they are doing just fine in the (Ontario) snow

if/when i get around to building my 75 series trayback Im thinking about putting 35's on 80 series alloys (or steelies with 80 series backspacing) and running a wheel spacer on the 75 (to clear tie rod end) - so I can swap tires on the 80 and 75 - leaving the mud tires on the 75 most of the time, but put them on the 80 if the need arises..... just random thoughts at this time till $$$$ lined up for the build

Report back with picture updates! We love HZJ77s!

Thanks again everyone, for all the info.
After a lot of thinking I decided on the 235/85/16s
A couple of things influenced the decision.
No turbo
Auto trans - geared a little taller than the manual.

So far, it looks like a great decision.
Overall handling in much improved.
Rain and snow traction is excellent.
And preliminary indications are that fuel economy is improved by about 1 liter less per 100 km. So about 10% - be interesting to see if this is confirmed longer term.

Here is a pic of the new tires - guess we all have different opinions on the aesthetics of tall and skinny.

And just for fun a pic of our 1965 Alaskan pop up camper on its trailer.
