Aesthetically speaking, I have no idea why anyone would say the 4Runner looks better. It’s not even close.

That’s one of the best things about the 250 is how it looks. Finally a modern vehicle that doesn’t look like it got mangled up by safety standards.

But I realize this is my opinion on this one.
i am not disagreeing with you. I wouldn't take a Tr4 for free, never have never will. LC all the way always.

That said, from what I hear, new 4runner looks like someone who body builds at the gym, while the Fake LC (Prado) has a swimmer/runners build when next to it.

Americans love muscly big hulking things... I have a few Tacomas - and Tacoma instagrammer bros are all about skipping leg day and body building..while vaping away... they are basically the wrx/gti guys of the offroad world...

Just reporting the facts...from the street

LOL, and hopefully with this administration change, we can see Toyota drop a big V8 in the Land Cruiser to truly set it apart from the 4Runner aside from the aesthetics… One can dream. :)

Also, the 250 still has separate bump stops compared to the 4Runner integrating them within the shocks. Not like your mall crawlers would even care about that.

Sadly wont happen... but yes one can dream...

Toyota is going to be 6 and 4 going forward in the US :(

It can’t cost that much money to drop the 5.7 or even the still produced 5.0 in it. That would be a huge cash grab from Toyota if they can do that.

Looking at that pic, I have no idea why anyone would say the 4Runner looks better. It’s not even close.
I hold the same opinion, but exactly in reverse.

That 4runner looks clean, modern, and has a design that will still be good looking 10 years from now.

That "LC" is bad to begin with - an awkward hot-wheels toy at best - and will look absolutely archaic in five years. Much like flat grey/chalk paint on cars that was all the rage three-four years ago, and has since passed into ugly history that no one wants to touch.

you are caling my cement gray Tacoma ugly? HOW DARE YOU

lol

CAFE may not be around for much longer once people realize how expensive it is to comply with it and it hits their wallets on right to repair issues. The average person cannot afford modern day vehicles.

Not to get this turned into a political discussion, but I just wish consumers still had the choice to own simple or complex vehicles.

The 250 has styling based on the 60 series, which is a timeless classic design. People love boxy SUV’s and I don’t see that trend changing any time soon.

Mr Toyota did a good job and fool'd me right into getting a LC250.

I think they did a very nice job on designing a modern rendition of a classic. I can see the body lines/stances of 60 + 80 + 100 series in the LC250, more so than that of the 200 series. I've owned Land Cruisers since the mid 90's. I've worked on them, enjoyed them, and helped friends & family join the ownership club. I'm not an expert by any stretch, but I certainly appreciate what a Land Cruiser is. I am thankful a new LC can still bought on dealer lots in the US.

In my opinion the LC250 drives like a Land Cruiser. Planted to the road, tight fit+finish, high quality hardware. There are few (none if you ask me) vehicles that drive like a Land Cruiser. History will judge where the LC250 falls in the ranks of Land Cruiser lore. I plan on doing my job and being a part of it.

Looking at the 4R/LC250 side by side photo posted earlier: height of the hood, rake of the windshield, size of the side windows, looks like the LC250 would have much better visibility, which is one of the hallmarks of older LC's and old japanese cars in general that I really like. The difference actually looks quite dramatic side-by-side.

It does seem crazy to me that Toyota released two different cars that are pretty much exactly the same with a different body look. But *shrugs*

It is genius. Hardly any engineering $$, but get completely different buyer demo and capture larger market share

This isn't new. Companies do it all the time

Highlander/TX

LX/LC

CTR/Integra Type S

etc etc....

The real cash grab is already happening, with Mr. T. selling this Prado as the "new Land Cruiser" and people buying it for the wives just to own the name plate and later realize they have a silly little toy with a winning 4 banger with little fuel consumption improvement for almost the same $80k that the 200 used to cost. I am not even considering the 1958 stripper version of the Prado, which is ridiculously overpriced for what it is. Talk about rear ending your fan base.

Yeah, but all of those examples are "luxury brand" distinctions. More unusual to see it under the same brand.

Gotcha

I think the USDM diff is, "land cruiser" was a luxury brand here... thus having it next to the junk 4runner..allows people who couldn't afford a real LC...something to buy

Note that in many other countries LC Prado is being used on the same 250....

Toyota knows how dumb Americans are... and are laughing all the way to the bank as @MRego correctly pointed out

I see similar. The 250 looks odd if not dreadful as a “Land Cruiser”. Reminds me of the square Jeep Liberty’s.

I quite like the latest 4 runner which is an evolution of the last gen. The 4 banger remains pathetic.

So clearly tastes differ.

or, getting on your knees, and swallowing for the new fan base...

its all about the perspective ;)
Correct, but in that case Mr. T. is getting handsomely well paid for that swallowing exercise. I think the ones suffering are the traditional Japanese folks (not the execs) that, back in Japan, wore the LC brand with pride and honor reflected on that 25-year life span goal. They now have to "whore-out" the name plate to a lesser product in the US.

This is the thing that doesn’t make sense. They have a built in fan base but are gambling on running them off in the hopes of attracting new fans which aren’t guaranteed to come. This is the car version of Disney Star Wars.

The CAFE standards have a lot of blame to shoulder here as well.

I wouldn't buy either of these POS, but word on the street is 4R is more macho

and we all know how instagrammers love macho

They are both ugly.

However, looks don’t get you up the trail with all your crap so I would be a shopper on the function over fashion POV but that’s my typical approach to this type of stuff and I have a closet full of identical pants to prove it.
