File this under no question is a dumb question, but are the manually locking front hubs on a 62 the same thing as lockers, just manually activated?

And if so, can one get similar locking hubs for the rear? Or should I? Everyone seems to run different equipment where lockers are concerned, but trying to be cost conscious as I proceed with my upgrades.

Hubs simply engage the front axle when in 4wd. Lockers elminate the slip in the differential. There's a lot of info on mud that will help explain the specifics of lockers.

The front hubs only engage the front axles to the wheels. This keeps the front driveshaft and diffs from spinning all the time. Your rear axles are always engaged to the wheels.

Thanks for the schoolage, guys. I knew those little guys weren't the end all be all but didn't know that they were different from lockers.

Sort of a tangential second question then: If I have 'manual' hubs in the front, that means I could potentially install, say, Aussie lockers in both the rear AND in the front? Their website doesn't recommend Aussies in front if one doesn't have manual hubs up there.

Yes, though many would argue for a selectable locker like the ARB in front.

Thanks, I just read a long list of locker threads -- sounds like selectable is the fav for in front, but I think I'll cross that bridge after rolling with an Aussie in the back for awhile.

i have an aussie up front and a full detriot in the rear and love that combo. sometimes i think the arb would be sorta nice to have but i honestly dont think it would make much of a dif (to me) other than i had a cool switch (bling factor for sure) to play with (as if i didnt already have enough of those)

Thanks! Bling factor has a lot of appeal for sure, but it sounds like the way the Aussie works it would be fine, just a little different for DD use. Anyone have Aussies front and ear that likes their setup?
