Anyone know how long it takes to swap them out. I am taking my 69' engine out and replacing with the 71' engine.

What do you have for mechanical ability?

What do you have for tools?

My son and I did a 2F swap in my shop in 4 hrs, fully equipped shop and 2 experienced mechanics.

3-4 bananna. I have lifts, pneumatic tools, sand blasters etc. I think I'm going to do this tomorrow. I think it may take me 12 - 16 hours.

Over 6 months... first cut the grass, refinish the basement walls, get called in to work, throw your back out, take the wife someplace nice, work some more on the basement, get called in to work, start another foolishproject, travel for a weekend to p/u cruiser parts sleep off a hangover... uh - you get the idea.

there is no set time anything can go wrong the main thing is do it right so you dont have to do it over working by myself i spread it out over 2 days and double check everything good luck

With those kinds of tools you should be able to do it within a day easy.

I've pulled drivetrains out of late model 40's in time for lunch while working at Urban LC. (overhead 3 ton tracked pulley makes it much easier than a traditional engine crane)

I always take advantage of a project to clean/fix everything else in the immediate area...

So my projects always take longer.

What started out as a 4" lift ended up being fix t-case to tranny seal, extend wheelbase, fix leaky steering box and adjust, replace leaking oil pan, etc. Took me 5 months

I hear you on that. Its called "perfectionism". I have that problem too but I have to take it up to the woods this weekend. The hole in the water jacket part of the block on the current engine is going to stop me... I can feel it.

see somtimes thats why i hesitate to do work on my cruiser somdays...the po was a bit different and it almost seems like pandora's box once you get into it you might as well do it right tho

no record, just was looking for average. I'm 95% done pulling the engine/trans/transf. Now its just bolting everything up. Want to go test run it tomorrow with a buddie who just got a jeep... then off this weekend for a 3 day run.

Finally got it out. Going to prep the new engine for the old manifold and power steering tonight and call it a day. The transfer case/tranny might also get swapped over or I may use another one that I have.

Here are some pictures.

I see one out but not one in!! And it 8:45PM East Coast ;)

Tomorrow is another day. Need to pick up some gaskets I ordered before I zip up the engine and pop it back in. I'd say a day to do this is feasable. We will see.

For those of us who are going to embark on this in the near future....

Any unexpected problems ?

WHat gaskets did you have to get?

ANy special tools needed?

So far 20 hours into the swap.

Some problems or extras that took time.

Power steering setup. Had to remove from old and put on new.
New Oil location on New motor had to be moved.
Replaced exhaust / intake gasket
Replaced clutch

The thing that took allot of time was getting the engine/tranny/trans back in today. Had to use jack stands, jacks and an engine hoist with a load ballancer to get it in. Finally took off the pass side bellhousing mount (off the frame) and it went right in. That is one thing I will do first next time.

Button'd up the fenders, skirts, bib, radiator, tranny cover and started planning new locations for a few items.

Tomorrow, need to get plugs, wires, cap, rotor and some wire to finish the job and see if she will turn over. Probably 3 more hours of work, then I'll put the seats back in, load it up with food/clothes and camping junk for a 3 day run. I'll probably trailer it up to the camp site just in case.

What do you mean?

I hope you installed a new rear main seal in there.......
One of the things I do now is to raise the engine /trans combo over into the frame.....using a floor jack on the rear I level the combo then roll the Cruiser forward to position it in the chassis........seems to be easier than trying to move the combo and keep it level, and removing that mount is required.....
