So I just got around to running my FJ55 for more than a few minutes and it started to overheat. I shut it down and figured it needed a new thermostat, pulled housing removed thermostat and noticed only 1 gasket at base below thermostat. I thought I remembered reading on Mud that there should be two, one on top, one below. Need help here people

18 and 20 in the diagram above.

Missing the upper gasket (18) typically results in running cold, not overheating. Hope it was the thermostat, and get the correct gaskets.

...and put your old thermostat in a pot of boiling water and see if it opens.

Uh, feeling a little dumb, looked at engine, no fan. Explains overheating.
Just checked inside of truck, found switch for electric external fan( I'm a dumbass)

No, your not a dumbass, the PO of the 55 probably was...you get to deal with what he did

is it a f, 2f or something else like a v8

wonder if the PO put a long snout pump on it when it needed the short version and had no room for a fan????

'Liven up' this thread with some photos, and the experts will be able to better point you in the right direction.....;)

Here ya go. I'm interested in what's up as well. No fan or shroud shown. There is an electric fan mounted on the front of the radiator.

Closer than you thought Paul. Apparently a '77 up clutch fan w/p being run w/o the fan or clutch.

I know I'm grasping here, but can you tell why? Is that not enough room? If this is a 72 with a 76's 2F in it.. does that require such shoehorning? I'm new and learning here.

i think the engine lengths of the F and 2F are about the same and dont require such shoehorning. but as stated above by @65swb45 , your water pump is not the one that should be there. the one that should be there would not have the pulley and fitting for the clutch fan which would effectively move the fan back. what probably happened is po could only get that pump but couldnt get the pulley clutch and fan to go with it and found it easier/ cost effective to just put an electric fan in... just guessing here but that sounds like something someone would do on a budget or if parts were hard to come by.

just check, on my 45, i was able to move my radiator forward by and inch and 1/4. not sure if the 55 will be able to do this but it might and might just be enough to get a mechanical fan back in there. of course, you could get the pulley, clutch and fan to suite that pump too.
