Things have slowed down since it's spring. But here is a pictorial update. Should be worth about 5000 words or so.

Rear fender rust removal and trimming. Quater panel trim.

This makes me want to build a 2 door, SWB 80.

This makes me want to build a 2 door, SWB 80.

It's going to be two door, but same wheelbase. I think it will be a good size. It's got no swaybars as it sits and losing all that weight up top made it handle like a sports car. Huge difference in driving feel between this one and my non-chopped relatively light 80.

I bet she'll climb like a ******* mountain goat when it's all said n done.

I know with the longer wheel base there are advantages. And having the rear bobbed will greatly improve the departure angle. I just have a soft spot in my heart for the SWB cruisers.

If this thing ever officially sees action I think I am going to make or have made a top like this. I don't want to deal with bows so unless i have a cage in the back passenger area it's going to get the fastback look. Ideally I won't be driving this thing in inclimate weather so the top will be more for keeping heat in in winter and the elements out when it's parked.

Not the most attractive look, but functional and should be cheap to have made. I only have about $1200 in the vehicle so a high dollar top just isn't in the cards.

So your not frenching some grande tapered cup holders into the flats of the half door? Just sayin' :grinpimp:

I'm not saying it won't happen. It hasn't happened yet though... Apparently everyone that builds half doors ads the cupholder so I might just do it to fit in.

would be a fitting addition given the thread title

The cupholders came in really nice this past week of wheeling. Just saying….

Got most everything capped and the various holes welded up. Since the pillars are three layers of folded sheet metal this is how I've been capping them. Seems like it would ad a little better rigidity? I'm not an engineer, though.

And I think she's ready for inspection.

This just moved towards the top of my next chop! Love it.

Looking great. Do you have a name for this creation yet? "Starbuck" or "Apollo" ?

Looking good.
Ive often looked at mine and thought how cool it would look morphed into a fouruner.
There are a few nice ute conversions kicking around down here but i like you dont think they look quite right

Back to the half doors….

I am trying to figure out how I want to do my rear half doors on FOO. I like how you restored the line at the back side of the front back to fit the rear doors. Looks really slick. Since I cut mine straight across, I plan to continue that line on the rear doors. Also, I found that area where you jumped the line back up, is where my elbow comfortably sits.

I am going to make some leather covered pads (much like center console on tufty box) so it is not too hot in that spot.

I also like where you ended the bottom of your line. Looks right above the side impact reinforcement bar. I forgot about that.

finally, I am going to take off the factory mirrors I used, and put on some jeep style mirror that I had on the tube doors, they flop out of the way really easy, and I have yet to have one explode on me like the factory mirrors do all too often.

My lines were dictated by the outside door handle and the side impact bar.

I really like the look of the factory mirrors, but I know they aren't the most sturdy items. I need something manual, too. I can probably get a jeep mirror from quadratic for 30 cents.

I think I'll make piece of 2x lumber with a pad on top that I can fasten into the hole on top of the door. That way I can remove it to get into the latch mechanisms.

Since you went straight across with the front doors I think that would look great on the rears as well. I thought you did the rears already?

Just went back and looked at foo. I actually like what you have taped off for the rear doors. You could always start there and if you decide you want to trim them down from that point you could.
