Has anybody done this... Is it even possible (is it cost effective) I know of a junk yard up in BC Canada that has a butt load of old surfs. What kind of mods would I be looking at. Thanks JonnY

Which Diesel are you considering? What Year Surf? You have to start there

I have some details should you go with the 1KZ-TE, I am being told they are becoming tough to come by.

Another questions that will help in establishing your decisions is Manual or Automatic?

Very possible. Very awesome.

A 1KZ-TE (3.0L IIRC) is what you want.

Steer away from the 2.4L 2LT-E. I've got one, and while I love it, I REALLY wished I had swapped a 1KZ-TE in instead. The 2LT-E (which is plentiful, because the heads all crack) would be hard pressed to move the weight of a 4 runner.

I'd rather have a 2LT-E than the 3.0 V6, but it is absolutely worth it for a 1KZ-TE.

You need to weld in new motor mounts no matter what you do, but that's easy.

After doing the 1KZ-TE install, I will be glad to post up any information I can to assist someone in doing it again. I am running it with it's factory mated 5 Speed manual transmission, and love it. I could withstand a little higher gearing for the HWY, but am not on it often so haven't yet.

Here's a pics of the installed 1KZ-TE, it is from a 1995 Surf.

Don't hesitate to ask any questions.

EDIT: Just installed 255-85-16's and gearing is right back in line.

Here's my question: why no build thread or ROTM for it????

I need the deets!

Alright keep your eyes out for the July-ROTM. I'll start to get to work on this gathering info and pics in the next few weeks.

At least I got some time.....

I will get an address posted up as soon as I call the old man. He lives up in Anacortes Washington goes to Canada on a monthly basis...

I have looked into diesel swaps for about a year and a half now. Currently I have a 4Runner and want a 1KZ-TE. Found an engine with a 5sp a few months back, but the half cut was $4900 + shipping. Obviously it can be done, it comes from the factory with this engine overseas. As for cost effective, probably not, but then again, what engine swap really is cost effective?

My only concern is when something breaks, parts are a pain to find and expensive. This is also why I would love a 4bt FJ60, common parts and relatively cheap. Whole different animal though. I would go either way if I had access and funds.

My faux-lux has paid for itself. Two years and 50,000 miles and I've broken even now.

Parts aren't THAT bad. They're sort of difficult sometimes, but for the most part, just buy the consumables ahead of time and realize that it will be pricey to replace something like a starter or IP.

Still worth it though.

Here's one for sale in the states 2LT-E. This motor goes for $2500 all over ebay, so it looks like a nice truck with the work already done. (No affiliation)

So Jon, when are we gonna start on this fun little project?

If we can find a surf state side.... Or a motor I would like to get-r-done this summer. I am going to go see my dad in May so I will look up in BC while I am up there. It is a toss up between the 1kz-te or the 3.4 with a super charger. GD I finely get a DD and I already want to put it under the knife. The poor 40 needs so attention tool. Oh and did I mention only way this will ever fly is if I go to Afghanistan for a year :crybaby: :bang:

I would use the 1KZT or the 15B-T. Its easier to tune the non-electric diesel pump engines.

The 1KZT is common over here, a good engine goes for 2500-3000 usd including the R151F tranny.

So it might be worth it to get it shipped the distance? Parts are easy to come across here, I have several starters laying around....
