They are wore down. I asked the same question to a DNR guy when I visited the WV state trout hatchery several years ago. He said that sometimes their tails get wore down from fanning spawning beds in the river but most of the time their tales are wore down because they are raised in really small concrete impoundments.
Those trout are a lot bigger than the ones my bro in law caught in VA this past weekend--this was my biggest Brook. Went out on the parkway to the wild parts of the Pedlar in Amherst Co. I need to start fishing that river...

Man it pays to fish with stand up guy! After I netted JohnVee's monster brook trout in my net I mentioned how I hated the nylon mesh net that I had because the lures would always get caught in the netting. Come home from work today and there's a big Amazon box with this bad boy inside. Thanks a bunch @JohnVee! You are the man!

Not trout but this is from last Monday offshore down here in Charleston. Went back Saturday and meat fish bite was nonexistent. Nothing like the blue water...

My brother in law caught these noodling last weekend. He's tried to get me to go a couple of times but there's no way I could make myself do it. I'll stick to a rod and a reel.
I'm sorry, but they really need to come up with a better name for catfish grabbing.... cause the mental image when saying "hey, I'm going to the lake and to deink some beer and noodling with my buds, wanna come? " just doesn't sound like a thing I'd like to do

Being born and raised a yankee, I have a similar response when people ask if I want to play cornhole.
And along those same lines when I first moved down here and people asked me if I shagged or liked shagging...... made me laugh for years..
I made the mistake of googling Surf Fishing Rig several years ago at home, except i misspelled fishing. I was totally unprepared for the imagery I was greeted to, nor the spousal hostility when she walked by and saw said imagery plastered across the laptop...

Ha! That's right, "shagging".
Before the family moved down I was at a bar in Carolina Beach. There was a band setting up. The bartender said they played shagging music. I thought she meant Barry White, or some sort of cheesie porno smooth jazz.
Just to clarify, "Cornhole" is not a southern thing. It's popular now but when I was growing up here in NC they were "bean bags" which sounds like a much better name for a game to me.
Now shag is a southern thing. I actually met my wife at shag lessons.
Yeah, that must have been wicked confusing.
