Get some size 6 or 8 hooks. Round bobbers about an inch or so. Small pack of split shot bigger than a BB. Anything you get will work just fine. Fish under a bobber with a split shot a foot above the hook. Adjust the depth with the bobber if you're not getting any bites. Or use an extra weight or two and fish the bottom. Bring some old needle nose pliers or grab some cheap forceps where you buy tackle.

@jimsmith1370 is right...they might just be more interested in anything except fishing after a few minutes - let them.

You'll want to hit up a Walmart, Dick's or online for a fishing license for yourself. The MIL man is usually more interested in drunk boaters than guys fishing with kids on shore, but you never know what they'll be up to any given day.

Nice, that's exactly what I was looking for, very much appreciated. I set the poles up pretty close to this, except I bought some powerbait at Walmart and then noticed everyone was using worms. Thanks for the help! I'll post back when we catch something.

I did a good amount of fishing of several types while I lived in the Keys. I bought different types of gear etc and played around with all kinds of bait and presentation methods usually targeting a specific species at a time.

The most fun I ever had fishing was with my pal Russ. Russ had zero experience fishing and bought this package of rubber lures off the TV. Something like 75 little rubber do dads along with a couple cheapo rods and reels he bought locally. I teased him a little about the lures but I joined in with him and tried them out. We caught the hell out of everything swimming on the gulf side right at the point where the flats start dropping off. We laughed our butts off and had a great dinner to boot.

That day taught me a valuable lesson. All the fancy gear and perfect bait is not what makes for a killer day on the water. Time spent with friends or loved ones laughing and having a good time is what counts. I had more fun that day with less than $100 in rods, gear and bait than on any trip with the best gear available. :)

Spent the week at ocean isle in a canal house. Took the boat with me and caught a few stripers and croakers. Caught this conger eel from the dock at night. Me and the boys tried our hand at bait casting which is fun and not that hard. Also had a crab trap set every night. Caught 3 flounder in the crab trap - and only 1 crab...this morning so he got to scuttle away. All in all, fun.

Being totally honest, the eel would have freaked me out.

Eels are the creepiest things in the world - that is the "cutest" eel I have ever seen. They are snakes, which I hate, + more weird. I couldn't get that eel off the hook - I would have like had to chop its head off or something . .

And to think Eel sauce at Sushi places is the boiled heads of eels.

I loved fishing as a kid. I think it was the lures and the tackle boxes and live bait and stuff more than anything. I had to scrounge up money for a couple Mepps lures - loved those things - they had a special spot on the tackle box :) Your kid should have his or her own tackle box - can even be one of those little tupperware deals - with like 3 hooks, 2-3 jigs and then give them a little money (or better, see if they will use their own) to buy something fun like a Mepps or whatever the cool thing is right now.

A cool poster would be one with like 50 different Meeps spinner bait lures on it, wouldn't it? :)

We had Tuesday PM and Friday all day fishing derby's as part of a really awesome summer rec program in my small town. So when you are "competing" with equals, it is fun.

My Dad loved to fish back then so that was also part of the draw. If your kids see you really love something, it is contagious. If you are not having a good time, they will likely not either :)

went on another three nine hour river tour today. Pretty much found the limits of paddling without running lights.

James was slaying the smallmouth, meanwhile i was discovering its sometimes best to leave that $5 stuck in the tree.

Went trolling for walleye with a good friend of mine today on Philpott. Didn't get on the water until almost 2 so expected a terrible mid day bite but ended up slaying em. Caught 11 total and missed a few more. Fantastic day to be on the water.

I got a new boat!! Southport 26. I did endless research for the last year, and the design and ride is second to none. Its and absolute beast offshore for its size. Best riding boat I have ever been on in its size range. Blows the old 30 ft grady white away in sea keeping ability, performance and fit and finish.
