Wondering how much correlation there is between 3UR head gasket problems and the cracked radiator problem. Thought being that the average non-enthusiast operator might have an overheat event be their first indication that their radiator let go at the part number boss. If that happened perhaps there was heat damage to either the head or gasket that is causing some gaskets to fail early. This isn't to say it's the only cause. Obviously maintenance plays a big role.

I'd probably be more than a bit hesitant to buy a 200 with a replaced radiator if I couldn't discuss with the owner how it transpired.

... perhaps there was heat damage to either the head or gasket or the - aluminum block - that is causing some gaskets to fail early. ...

And in addition to the radiator don't forget about the water pump or valley plate leaks.

Wow sounds like TOYOTA is now SUBARU???!!!

$4000 for HG - that is a big price tag.

Wonder how this will hurt 200 values down the road.... as now this is widely exposed problem

$4000 for a HG job on a Toyota UR V8 would be pretty reasonable.

Now if the head, or worse the aluminum block warps that will seem like pocket change.

CONGRATULATIONS!!!!

Good riddance!!

Will you finally leave our forum and go hang out with the Prado GX boys and the F150 boys, or will you keep posting about how unreliable your LC was due to the infotainment failure?
All of the above. For your sake.

Well, not to say you ain't right Ryan, ... But ...

Two my E46 M3's needed the subframe fix done, and one 2006's needed the LN Eng IMS fix done ...

Just saying , not just tales from the crypt... $hit does/did happen.... Am I going to sell my 13 cuz HG fear ? Well, you know the answer, actually looking to buy one more. 😂
Every E46 M3 RACP has cracks, if you don’t find at least one, you didn’t remove enough undercoating yet…not to mention Vanos, RB’s, etc, it just is what it is.

Not sure about the 200 but I was researching Gen3 Prius for my daughter and apparently HG issues are very common on those, to the tune of about $3500-4000.

My HG went on my 2010 Prius with 294K miles (all by me). Swapped in a JDM engine with 54K miles for $1200 in 5 hours.

Prius: BEST TOASTER PICKUP HYBRID EVAH!!!!!

I purchased it from a PHX wrecker mainly because they would deliver to me for $75. PHX is 3hrs north of me. Paid for it on Tuesday at 8am. Had it at 4pm the same day.

Swapped it out the next day before lunch.
Appreciate the assist.

Reason I ask is on the farm we have a 500K mile RX300 and a 650K mile Tacoma and a few other over 400K mile LC. I am always looking for a good engine place, that is reliable, IN CASE I need it swapped. Haven't needed anything as of yet.

I basically started on car-parts.com and then called about 30 wreckers within a 200 mile radius of me to see who would deliver to my location.

Mileage of engine was also important. At 53k miles with normal maintenance I should get at least 100k miles based on statistical understanding of Toyota engine longevity. That’s a great return on a $1200 investment.

Engine swaps are reasonably easy on toasters. 😂😂

My plan is to basically just keep swapping in $1200 engines in perpetuity. 😂😂

Again, it’s a damn toaster. Point A to B and I’m still getting 40-50 mpg daily.

Excellent, sir!

when HG are not fixed …

This is a 2014 Land Cruiser with 220k miles. I see 4 cylinders with coolant steam-cleaning the pistons and it has never been over heated. The coolant passage between each cylinder seems to be the cause for each clean piston, so I would concur with TCCN in my opinion (For what it's worth).

Do you know if the coolant has ever been changed on that engine?

Thank you for sharing this.

What was the reason or reasons for open her up ?

And as someone else asked, history of oil and coolant flushes in this care would be nice to know.

Thanks again for sharing.

You owned this vehicle from new?

Original radiator?

Yikes! Did you check if the head and/or block warped? Could you post a picture of the failed head gasket - although based on your description I assume it would just demonstrate the same failure pattern at the coolant passages closest to the cylinders.

Anyways sorry if this is your truck. Not something anyone wants to have happen to just a 10 year old Toyota, let alone a "Land Cruiser".

I actually bought this cruiser knowing it had a bad HG. I don't know the maintenance records before I had it, but he was chasing a misfire code for a long time. My guess is the maintenance has been ongoing during his ownership from what I can see and from working on cruisers for a career. When I got it I did a standard combustion leak test, and there was exhaust gases in the radiator.

I didn't take pics of the HG yesterday, but it has the same failure point as TCCN talked about. The coolant port running between each cylinder appears to be where it was exchanging. It will be interesting to see how many HG failures I will see, but to be honest this is the first 200 we've seen with a blown HG. Most of the time we are just doing PM on the 3UR, or installing super chargers ;-)

Thanks for getting back, I'm sure you guys are busy. Of Course if you do have anymore HG failures everybody would want to know about it.
