You could make your own fill hose for the propane tank. Go to a local propane dealer that sells propane hoses and fitting and get two fittings that fit onto the liquid nozzle. Un-hook your primary hose and put the fill hose on and have your propane filled that way.

It has a filler point in the rear quarter panel - no need to drop the tank. Best to recess the filler point so it doesn't get hit when wheeling & use a flexible hose between the filler point and the tank.

i am considering going to propane on my 1991 FJ75 and turboing it. i read an article decades ago about a gent that did this and the results was unreal
but
i lost the article and this read made me think of heading back down this road.

have you come across any problems in the years since you did the install?

cheers and thanks for the write up.

I'll have to take some pics and post em up...but I recently got myself an Aussie Pig and it already has a Propane Conversion installed...dual fuel so I assume the engine was never converted to run Propane efficiently as I've been reading in all these propane threads.

The system seems simple enough. A large tank under the back end...looks like its a 20-25 gallon tank, with a fill nozzle plumbed into the rear bumper. A Vaporizer under the hood plumped to the Coolant lines. Some sort of Mixer that is part of the Air Intake, housed within the Air Filter actually...and then that is plumbed to the Corroborator. There is also a solenoid on the fuel pump to cut off the Petrol I think. All of that is controlled by a simple switch in the dash to switch between Petrol & Gas, as well as a pull cable that seems to adjust a diaphragm that is part of the Mixer within the Air Intake. It appears that the system might not pass mustard in the US...probably illegal. The Tank has no pressure release so it cannot be filled correctly according to a propane place I took it to.

However...it currently just sputters, chokes and dies when you flip the switch to run on Propane...so...any tips on trouble-shooting, tuning up the propane system? From what I've heard from others and read it is probably something with the mixer...I just need to find the "happy spot" where it runs nicely.

Also...on my corroborator, the Return Fuel Line is cut and capped...and the return line along the frame rail is also cut and plugged (which seems to result in building pressure in the fuel tank). Anyone know if this was done because of the propane conversion? That is my assumption...that you wouldn't want the Return Fuel Line to allow propane into the fuel tank...but I just don't know for sure.

I recently removed a dual fuel system from a club member's Aussie 40. Sounds just like the one in the previous post. I am taking the box of parts and the 75liter tank to my propane dealer next week and see what is usable. Unfortunately, I cant find any vendor information on the web to help us set this thing up.

For those of you in the USA.
Mount fork lift tanks. No space required. get some decent milage per tank.

easy to fill and carry 2 around and you can swap them out on longer trips.
You might even have a local LPG dealer PU and drop off at your home????

We did it here for a Durango and my friend has them deliver to his door step each Wed.

UP in Canada you can find the stuff at near every second service station.
I found down on the West coast US we had a hell of a time getting a fill.

Note.
with the fork lift tanks you might get a better rate.
No road tax?

Do it guys as it is eco friendly, easy to convert, clean and about half the cost of Gasoline.
Your motor oil will look like honey after 8 months no lie and still be in good shape.

how many kilometers out of a forkilift tank ?

It seems to me I got about 200 Klms to a 33 liter bottle with a v8 durango and some serious mnts to cross over.

They just put a road tax on LPG here in Costa Rica.
I am swapping my 90 liter over for fork lift tanks.

Hows the summer treating you up in Clover.
I used to live in Langley then moved back south. Been years since I was there last.

You should buy up all the LPG conversions on craigslist and sell them to the guys on the form.

Would be a big help to them and you could make some  $ well at it.

Will have to meet for a brew at the cloverhole if I make up this year.
Gotta do my taxes one year.

Im going to convert my 55 to lpg (propane).
My 80 was duel fuel also.
very very common down here, in fact people are converting turbo diesels to lpg, and the government is handing out rebates to ppl that convert their car/truck to lpg.
all service stations have an LPG bowser. a couple around here even have CNG bowsers (compressed natural gas - similar to what runs through the streets to yur house to run heaters, gas appliances etc)

fuel economy on the road is about the same, if not a little bit worse then when running on petrol, however the lpg is about 1/2 the price of petrol, so its a lot kinder on your wallet. (the reason most down here convert)

power is decreased a little. i noticed in my 80 when switching from petrol to lpg, the power would decrease straight away.

it WILL burn valves if running it dedicated in your engine. I speak from numerous workshop and personal expereince. running a flashlube system, or alternating lpg use with petrol will help overcome this.

LPG cylinders are strong, im yet to see one breached through normal driving/wheeling. much safer then petrol, expecailly a petrol tank mounted under your seat!
They have pressure relief valves that operate under extreme heat impingement, but will bleve like any gas cylinder under constant fire with no cooling. either way you would be out of the car before that happened, or your destiny was sealed regardless of the lpg tank.

i have heard of a couple of vehicles destroyed, along with thier owners with lpg tanks mounted in the vehicle that have developed a leak overnight, and the escaped gas filling into the car to await the owner to open the door. i always prefer to mount them under, where the lpg, which is heavier then air, can get away, and you can smell it before it becomes a disaster.

Post some pics of your system blackgold, I should be able to help you tune it.

The klms i did in my 80, i would have gone bankrupt running it on dedicated petrol, filling it up with $60 worth of gas was sooooo much better then $120 worth of petrol to drive the same distance...

Do it....

Dave

sounds good .
give me a shout when ya make it back up

 Jake
